While the AMG GT has only just arrived in the collective automotive consciousness, the company is already planning for the future of its newest sports car. In other words, Mercedes is planning to take it racing.

Tobias Moers, the AMG boss, recently told Autocar that the company is planning on building a GT3 racecar that will be fully FIA-sanctioned. The new AMG GT GT3 will replace the aging SLS GT3; however, the AMG GT GT3 isn’t due out till 2016. The GT3-spec car will be lightened considerably, with more horsepower and better drivability to ensure the car is competitive.

Moers went into few details about the GT3 program. He also avoided venturing far into rumors that the Mercedes-AMG GT3 would spawn a roadgoing version. Moers stated the objective of a GT3 AMG GT would be to decrease the weight by around 220 lbs. and have about 550 hp. That wouldn’t be hard for AMG to do, either. The team could use more carbon fiber as well as turn up the boost on the very “under-stressed” engine.

We will likely have to wait a bit longer for the road-going GT3 version as opposed to the racecar. I’d estimate arrival around 2017 to 2019. If that isn’t enough to set your hair on fire, you can always wait till 2018 when the AMG GT Black Series comes out. That should definitely give anyone a run for his/her money.
