Mercedes’ Maybach Coupe Looks Just Like the Exelero

There is no place more appropriate to debut a Mercedes-Maybach Coupe Concept than next week’s Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach. It’s the ultimate destination for the most expensive and luxurious cars in the world, and there’s even an entire putting green dedicated to stand-out concept cars. As far as target audiences go, it’s not wrong to assume that the Concours is a direct hit for Mercedes-Benz.

Before the big unveil, however, M-B posted the teaser above to Instagram. The image shows an extremely long arching top outline of the concept, and the caption gives one piece of information: it’s “almost 6 metres of ultimate luxury,” which means it’s going to be a little less than 20-feet-long. A while later, they released the following photos as well.

If you know your Maybachs, you might notice that this shape looks a little familiar. Its super long hood and low-profile greenhouse looks an awful lot like the Exelero, the other Maybach Coupe. Built back in 2004, the one-off had four seats and featured a twin-turbo V12.

Now, the two aren’t exactly the same. The beltline is a little more humped, the window swoops up rather than down, the “mirrors” on the new model are probably cameras (at least for the concept), and there’s obviously no gas cap. But for the most part, this is the same shape. Let’s hope they actually build more of them this time.
