Luxury, future technology, global importance, sensual purity, and… Daft Punk? Mercedes-Benz is using this language to describe a new family of vehicles that it is bringing to the road. With such charged language, I wouldn’t blame you for being excited about a new lineup of sports cars and speed machines. Except Mercedes is talking about the exact opposite of sports cars. These are all words, phrases, and ideas used to describe their new semi-trucks.

I don’t know what the hell is going on here either.

Mercedes dumped a big piece of info on their website about their commercial truck plans that extend all the way to 2025, and what they have come up with is weird, interesting, and a little bit insane. Using the “sensual purity” design language, they have created a family of new trucks that will redefine the market. Probably.

For starters, the big European trucks won’t really be driven; there is a lot of autonomous tech crammed in those things. For the new V-Class/Vito, the cabins can be equipped with acres of leather and reclining seats with plenty of technology. Like a really big S-Class.

And then there is the actual look of the new trucks. For the newest big rig, Merc has come up with fancy tech that uses special lights to create shapes on its front end to look more like a standard vehicle. Benz says it was inspired by the French musical duo Daft Punk.

I couldn’t make that up if I wanted to.

Self-driving, Daft Punk-looking semi-trucks, and leather clad cargo vans are coming to a road near you. Or so I am told. I don’t even know anymore. I am writing the words, but for some reason they still don’t make any sense.

Will Daft Punk get royalty payments for each truck?
