Off-Road Testing the 2016 G500

Beloved by sports athletes and wheel-heeled soccer moms alike, you’re quite unlikely to ever see a Mercedes G500 go off road. That doesn’t mean it is any less capable, just because their owners simply choose to go to yoga class. The G500, in fact, is one very capable machine.

Powering the G500 is Mercedes’ twin turbo V8 engine, as usual, along with the 7-speed automatic gearbox. The AWD system on the G500 is unique to that vehicle compared to all of the other SUVs on offer from Benz. Electronic locking of the differentials is just a touch away, through buttons on the dash, as well as an extremely articulate suspension made to handle nearly anything you throw at it.

At the Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, I was able to experience first-hand the off-road prowess of the G500 (a MY2015 model). After being instructed to entrust my safety entirely to Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) and the brake hold function, I became a believer. Perched nearly vertical and looking down a 70-degree slope, all of the MB safety and guidance systems came into play, so that when I simply tapped the throttle to release the brake-hold, the car safely descended at the prescribed walking pace. Very impressive stuff indeed.
