Rumor: Will Mercedes Offer Platforms to Aston Martin?

Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin have been getting pretty comfortable recently. First there was news that AMG would lend their engines to Aston Martin. That’s unusual, but not unheard of. AMG is pretty spectacular at what they do, so I don’t think anyone is worrying about Aston Martin’s performance capabilities… Well, at least not yet. This news might change that.

Mercedes has been working on something they call “modular sports car architecture.” Basically it’s the platform on which they intend to build the next generation SLK and SL on. Aston Martin, by comparison, doesn’t actually have a new platform. People often complain that all Aston Martins are the same car with different lengths for good reason. Every one is built using Aston’s VH platform. While they’re all gorgeous, they platform hasn’t seen a complete revision since 2001.

Autoblog also mentions Mercedes might be offering up an SUV platform as well. Ideally, this would be a full sized, Range Rover competitor.

Rumors typically have a little bit of truth to them and Aston Martin has been a little bit in the hole financially. Who knows if the next generation of Vantage and the next generation of SLK will be platform mates. We’re that to happen though, I think the line between Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz would begin to blur.

Is an AMG engine on a Mercedes chassis really an Aston? Let me know what you think.
