'06 E350 - SBC Recall - What's covered?

Inherited a 2006 E350 with the lovely SBC hydraulic brake system from a family friend, it has 115k miles.
The vehicle needs quite a bit of TLC, but surprisingly very clean on the undercarriage and running with no check engine lights.

The only issue I'm working towards is resolving a 'BRAKE Visit Workshop' and hood ajar (which I understand to be a simple switch) message.
All brake pads appear to be nice and thick, from my basic research it seems brake pad wear sensors would indicate a WEAR message. Stop switch has been replaced with no change in fault message.

I referenced recall #2005110001 with the MB dealer, but they notified me that if they diag and find a part that's NOT covered, then I would be liable for the $260 diag fee. I'm pretty handy working on cars, but don't have the fancy scanner/MB specific diagnosis tools (though I DO have INPA for BMW.. so if it's similar I would be happy to go through the effort, though it seems MB has made it much more difficult).

So, what parts are covered by the recall? I've seen in some cases the recall covers literally anything but wear sensors, but pump, harness, wheel sensors, etc.
I'd just like to go into the MB dealer with a bit more knowledge, thanks!

Your dealer was very kind,.if you are sure that your car has SBC and not the ABR.

In EU the exchanging program for SBC is no more available from many years.

The Bosch company can give you a good price ( at least here in EU) to replace your expired SBC with a remanufactured one

Also, if the SBC is not very noisy you can try to reset the counter with one of the solution from the web.

If you're in the US, it's a 25 year extended warranty not a recall. Get a scanner that can read MB specific codes, Autel AP2500E on Amazon is only around $60 and can read all MB specific codes. Don't clear the brake codes though, dealer needs to see those in order to do the repair.

And don't reset the counter, it's just an anticipated fail warning, once you reset it, it will probably fail before you hit the counter again. Then you lose 90% of your braking. All 2006 models in the US had SBC. And the 2006 models also had the bad balance shaft. Hope that doesn't go on you.

Fyi, my SBC unit has been replaced in 2023 under extended warranty. I live in the Netherlands btw

I would not advise the resetting of the counter. Get it replaced, you do not want the brakes to fail (it happended to me)

I just had the SBC unit replaced on my ‘04 E500 under the warranty. My warning was red, but the one on my wife’s car is currently white, however she has the fault for pressure. The scan tool is your friend and will help get it covered by the dealer.

BTW, that’s a healthy diag fee for your dealer!

The tip of the Autel AP2500E is excellent, I have one on order now.

@nd-photo.nl , was your warning red or white? Nevermind - saw your thread and it's red.
I'm seeing most red warnings are getting the warranty, but haven't seen much about the white/normal warnings.

If you run up the # of counts, is that covered? I suspect that might be the case here since we're at 117k and mostly urban driving.

I hope the Autel will come in handy and this is a simple fix without a dealer visit - I don't want to pay that $260 diag just for a tech to plug in a scanner and kick back a code that isn't covered...

My 2005 E55 with SBC had the white visit brake shop warning. The problem was the pressure accumulator and the dealer replaced it at no charge to me and they even washed my car!

It’s certain faults, not necessarily whether the light is white or red. I believe it mainly comes down to whether the fault itself returns quickly or not.

Autel scanner picked up 63 DTCs (LOL), but most were due to under voltage; car has been sitting for awhile. The ones I cared about the most were with the SBC (or I guess it understands it as ABR)

Fault codes: 9034 (Operational fault of component 'A7/3n1 (Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) module)')

ABR codes: C2230, C2210, C0CAE, C0B40, C240

If you're curious to the full report:

https://autel-inspection-report-fron...f0a51c1a080948

Not finding much searching these specific codes to see if the extended warranty covers these.

I'm going to try and see if I can find the pressure accumulator pressure (68 bar?), which is typically what fails and is hit/miss on being covered.

Then I will likely do a full wipe of the DTCs and start daily driving the car and seeing what returns.

If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears!

If the brake error comes back and I'm still clueless, I may be making a visit to the dealer before I continue to shine up this pile.

Don't delete any of the error codes related to SBC, those are the codes the dealer needs to see to cover it. You're probably better off not deleting any codes and just take it to the dealer as is and after they fix it, you can delete the old codes.

Really I'm just concerned about trying not to pay the $260 diagnostic fee
If it's a code I know they're not going to cover, I'd rather skip the hassle and work towards the solution myself.

I suppose you are right though, might be a hassle to get the SBC specific code back.
