2001 320ml brake lights stay on?
Hello, I read 01 ML320 BAS/ESP, 4-ETS, ABS, Brake Light and my problem is that brake lights stay on all the time w/no instrument lights comming on.
I checked the brake switch and its not hitting the brake pedel, I took the switch out and when I press on it the brake lights go out.
I also checked the fuse box on the front passager side and all seemed good.

While depressing the brake pedal, pull the plunger pin all the way out then release the brake pedal. Check a number of times to see if the brake lights are working properly. If not, you will need a new brake light switch.

ok I did the switch test, and it still does work so I 'm looking for the wright switch to get.
(While depressing the brake pedal, pull the plunger pin all the way out then release the brake pedal. Check a number of times to see if the brake lights are working properly.)
The switch thats in right now, the only numbers I could find on it are 06W36, the bottom where the wires connect and plunger are white.
Can I get any type of brake switch?
do you know if there has been a recall for this?

It's hard to believe that you have been driving around for a month with your brake lights on.
From what you are saying, the brake switch is operating properly, because when you manually push the plunger the lights go off. It is apparent that the plunger has not been pulled out enough.
Remove the connector to the switch and then remove the switch. Pull the plunger out as far as it will go and then reinsert the switch.

I don't drive this around, I have another car I drive.
I've had it out three times, the first time when I pulled the plunger out it clicked and when I put it back in its still not hitting that tab, maybe a 1/16th of a inch.
I have not been able to pull it out any further, I have tried wrapping the plunger and using channel locks... so I'm game to try anything!

In my last post I forgot to include the fact that there is a recall for the brake light switch, but the reason why you didn't receive a recall notice is you never notified M/B that you were the new owner.
The notice probably went to the last known owner that M/B was aware of and he or she threw it away. You must call M/B Customer Assistance Center @1-800-FOR-MERCEDES ask them to send you a NOTICE OF PURCHASE OF USED CAR form. Then discuss having them send you a recall notice.
As for the brake light switch, I would purchase one a dealer and install it yourself. Then wait for the recall notice.

Ok , I bought a new brake switch put it in and the rear brake lights still stay on?
The brake switch does not make contact with the tab on the brake arm the same problem as before.
I have no lights that are comming on deplaying any problem so what is the problem here? is there a fuse somewhere thats causing this?

If you remove the connector from the switch, do the lights go out?

If you are sure the plunger is pulled all the way out, then pull up on the brake pedal and see if it makes contact with the switch.

Ok I redid what you posted in post #2 three times and pulled up on the brake pedal and it still is not touching the switch.
I measured the plunger on the switch an it sticks out 3/4's of a inch.

If the brake pedal assembly doesn't contact the switch and push in the plunger, it will never turn off the brake lights and the computer may think the brakes are activated and not allow cruise control or the BAS system to work properly, if at all. Without being able to examine the assembly first hand, I can only guess as to why the parts are not relating properly. My first two guesses would be that you were given the wrong switch or that it's mounted incorrectly. It must be mounted in such a way that the plunger is pushed in far enough to switch off the lights when the pedal is up.

Since you became a member in Oct. and this was your first post, there might be a possibility that the brake booster was replaced prior to your buying the truck.
If that was the case then the booster rod was not adjusted properly. Remove hairpin #25, and then remove connector #26. Push booster rod off of the brake pedal and pull brake pedal upward and see if it now makes contact with the brake light switch.
If it does then you will have to keep the pedal up and turn the rod counterclockwise until the the rod is properly aligned with the hole in the brake pedal.

My suv had cob webs hanging from it and I didn't have alot of free time so I brought it to the dealer and it turned out that I slambed on the brake pedal to hard and bent it.
Had the pedal replaced the brake light switch was fine, tuned it up, computer is ok, they found problems w/remote and rear passager door lock that need to be replaced, which will be another day and new post, other than that it works good.
I would like to thank everyone for the great help, I learned alot!
