4 Cyl vs 6 CYL My Experience

While I'm only talking the 328i here I agree completely with this comment. Benz cocoons the engine compartment far better than BMW. BM's 4 cylinder diesels are also more refined than their Benz equivalent but Benz does the better job of external sound suppression. Benz does the better job of internal sound suppression as well on the W205. Not on the 204 but improved in approx 2009 with the improved sound deadning kit in production.

Benz 4 cylinder engine progression:
M111 - Crude, course, unrefined & a gas guzzler ~ but robust
M271 (supercharged) & M271 Evo Turbo ~ improved refinement but certainly not class leading ~ reduced reliability.
M270/M274 - Lacks refinement & makes a diesel like drone ~ not class leading. Retains M271 simplex timing chain. Needs duplex chain.
None are exactly inspiring ~ 270/274 is at least frugal.

I thought the C300 was zippy enough and was going to buy one, but then I drove a used C400. My wife and were both like "whoa" after accelerating away from the dealer on a test drive. I was sold instantly. Thankfully the wife didn't mind that there wasn't a pano roof. The 6 is in an entire different category in terms of guts and sound. The C300 did not have the most desirable sound but was still fun to drive. The C400 goes beyond fun and has me giggling at times as I swoop through backcountry roads. It's really no comparison. If you are a car guy the 6 is it!
