Had this myself from time to time, replaced the battery as most people would, problem persisted until it got to the point I used it as a normal key.
Unfortunately it cost $750 from the stealer for a new key!
That raises an interesting point, the cheapest replacement part on my 63 so far was $69 for an oil filler cap.........hmmmm, can you actually buy something cheaper?

I'm having issues with my car turning off. It's been in the shop for a few days. The key I normally use is suspected as the cause of the car shutting down or an issue with the keyless go. As part of process of elimination I was asked to try using 2nd key for a while.
The second key battery was replaced and the car released to me to try. Since using the second key I'm getting this key not detected message a lot. Key is usually sitting in centre console.

Think I have you beat on the cheapest part. Bought a mass air flow sensor cover for $8. I actually felt I paid a reasonable amount of money for the part that I received. Air filter kit was only $27 too.
Also, previously a link was given for removing the battery. That was not the kind of key that I have. So, if you have the chrome finish key that requires the removing of the plastic cover insert to get to the battery, that video can be found here:

when this started happening to me... it wasn't the battery... after a while it started doing other weird things...
so i took it to the dealer and they found a short in the receiver antenna wires in the driver door...

I used to get the 'key not detected' message a lot. I would click on the door lock and unlock buttons and the car would pick up the key most times. A few times I had to take out the button and use the key manually. This spring the keyless go quit working all together. I took it in to the dealer and they ordered a new part. After a few days of driving it started working again. I told the dealer but he put the part in anyway and it has been working great since.

My main key started to give me this message as well from time to time. So I'm now using my spare key, no problem.
It started having this problem after I replaced the battery with the ones I purchased from the drug store. The dealership said the MB battery are stronger & last longer, not sure if it's true but I still bought 2 from them since it's cheap. I didn't test the main key yet as I'm now using the spare key.
The dealership wants 400$ for a new key including programming at worst case if main key transmitter is going bad. But they said the key will still start the car by turning the key in ignition even with a bad transmitter so no need to buy a new key at this point.
