Trunk won't open manually after unplugging battery

Hi guys,

Sending my ECU to MHP. Unplugged the negative on the battery, closed the trunk. Wanted to put something back in there, but it would not open. Looked inside the car to see trunk access but I realized it can only open from inside.

I know you can jump start the car from under the hood but my wife's hood just won't open since a week (appointment already booked). Talk about some bad luck.

I just want to confirm the car will get power once I plug the battery jumpers (enough to open the trunk!) that are under the hood.

I'm thinking I'm not the first person ever to disconnect their battery and close their trunk.

let me know if you had the same issue or can confirm this is normal.

thanks!

There is a hole for the key on the back of the trunk, near the license plate. Pull the metal key out of the fob, then insert and twist. Wallah, the trunk should open.

Too late now, but when I shipped my ecu I left the trunk open while the battery was disconnected.

Looked everywhere, there is no hole. I even removed the license plate to be sure it wasn't hidden by the side of the plate. I'm thinking it my be different for either my year - 2010 - or since its Canada.

I guess I'll wait and try with the booster cables

Thanks

I am working from memory, but that hole should be on the top edge of the license plate from the trunk facing down. If you crutch, eye level with the plate then look up, you should be able to see it.

Why did you disconnect the negative.. That will do absolutely nothing in the event that the vehicle somehow gets grounded. The negative is the return path of current through the vehicle. You need to disconnect the positive to be absolutely sure you have removed power from the vehicle, and then still turn the ignition to discharge any residual power within the electrical system.

If you want to, you can also download a copy of the user manual online and read up on it. I am going to do that tonight.

I always read to disconnect the negative first on a battery. If you remove the positive first, there is always a possibility that your wrench will ground and cause a spark (could cause some problems and can potentially be dangerous).

Real story on about.com: "I was working at a R&S Strauss store outside of Trenton, NJ. One of the mechanics was changing a battery and went for the positive cable first. The wrench hit the negative terminal and melted his wedding ring to his finger. He lost the ring and the finger."

The vehicle really doesn't have any power, no trunk lights, nothing. I will probably disconnect the positive as well since when reconnecting the battery you should connect the positive, then negative.

That's if I can open that trunk!

I just looked on my Canadian 2010 C63 and the slot for the key is under the lip above the rear plate on the driver's side. The valet keys fits but I needed to wiggle it a bit. Turn it toward the front I think to open the trunk. Turning it to the rear seems to lock it .

you don't need to disconnect the battery to take out the ecu, as long as you dont start the car without an ecu in place

Andy from MHP specifically mentioned it, I don't really know the exact purpose, maybe to prevent it from happening (person not knowing ECU is out) so that might be the only purpose then...

Worked good thanks! The key slot is enterily black, I didn't see a key hole. Seemed like a piece holding the trunk.

thanks again
