Have a 2011 C63 as a daily am looking for a weekend fun toy!!
I got my c63 in January of this year and absolutely love it! I transitioned from an IS-F and have no complaints. I am now looking to get a weekend fun car / track car and have 60K to spend. Honestly i have no clue on what to get! The three cars that have crossed my mind are 1st a lotus exige s which might be hard considering I am 6"4 second is z06, and third is used GTR which is hard to find in the price range. I know this may be off topic but let me know what you guys think!!
Thanks!
Thanks!

First, I think we need to know what you intend on doing with the car. Any serious track time? Weekend warrior? Mostly cruising the strip?
Second, I'd like to know why everyone is recommending the GT-R as a "fun" car. On the street it's the most clinically depressing bore you could pick. The only place is shines is on the track, and only if your definition of fun is having the fastest lap. Trust me, the guy in the e30 M3 or 993 is having more fun for the price of your brake job.

Either the GTR or a 996 GT2. The GTR if you want the latest technology, the GT2 if you want one of the last pure drivers cars w/ zero electronic nannies.
Low mileage GT2's can be had for 70K now.
Both can be modded to the teeth.

Thing about the GT-R is that it's really fast in part because it has powerful computer co-pilot. With a "simpler" car like a Porsche, you're more likely to develop driving skill, and maybe also have more fun in the process. Being as fast as possible is only important for people making a living racing, which means just about no one in this forum.

congrats on the c63! Those are awesome cars.
As far as your weekend toy, definitely go drive those cars.
I'm 5'10" and I felt a little cramped in a C6. I spent 3 days (rented through hertz) driving one up and down hwy 1, and really enjoyed it, but if I was even a couple inches taller, I would have been uncomfortable.
The other thing I will say, if you're serious about having a track car, realize that your C63 should be your fun weekend car, as a track car is its own animal. In your shoes, if I had $60k to play with and was serious about a track car, I would look for a decent used car around $30-$40k and use the rest of the budget to bring it up to race ready status.
At the very least track wheels & tires, brake system upgrades (racing fluid, racing brake pads, if not stainless lines and/or a full BBK), helmet and other safety gear (harnesses?), adjustable coilovers, etc. That stuff adds up really fast, not even counting track time dues/fees and specialty track event insurance (your insurance company will almost certainly not cover a track event), etc.
Track driving is incredibly fun and definitely worth it, but realize just having a fast car is not the full price of admission.
That said, an exige is a great track choice (price, performance, trackability), but definitely try it on for size.

You're right. What was I thinking? The GTR is the dullest car out there. Nothing "fun" about brutal acceleration and incredible handling.
Which makes me wonder why every other thread on this forum is about bolting on better performance and improved handling?

just a +1 to this line of thought/questioning

And if brutal acceleration is your thing you really should test drive a Z06 or ZR1.

I have an older 420hp 944 Turbo stripped / specked out as a weekend toy. 50/50 weight distribution coil over shocks, sub 2k pounds. under 25k invested in it.
Its totally bananas, its on full slicks pretty much all the time and still way to much most of the time. cheap and a mind blowing thrill ride every time you step into it.
it makes you appreciate the technology in our new cars. but it also connects you to the car and the road like no other new car can..

I never said that it wasn't a fast ride, I said that it was a boring drive which is not only my opinion but many others who have drove that car. It's like the old first-gen Vipers that didn't even have ABS... they are very challenging to drive 100%. A GT-R takes very little skill to drive fast, everything is computer controlled and automatically corrected to perfection. It's better but it's not fun at all. Don't take it personal, it's just my opinion and you're welcome to drive whatever car you like.
Was talking about the fun factor as it related to speed and handling. Fairly easy concept to grasp. Computers can be turned off along with those perfect corrections. Your opinion.....yes, just simplistic and misinformed. But hey, don't take it personally.

None taken. Have a nice day!

What about the new Mustang BOSS 302? Or a Shelby GT500? Those are under the $ 60k mark and are serious performance cars. Also, maintenance and mods on those cars are relatively cheap.

Ferrari 430 (Scud if you are aiming for the track) or a 599 if the budget allows for it.
Nothing beats the magic of a Ferrari especially when we are talking weekend toys. Would be too much of a handful driving these cars every day.
Can you find faster and better handling cars for less? Sure. Will they give you the same tingling sensation every time you get in and fire up the engine? I doubt it.

Not sure if you can get it in the US. This thing is simply amazing.
I also agree that if you are going to track the car, you need to set aside money for mods, repairs, insurance, tires and brakes. It is not cheap entertainment but if you can muster the cash, it is extremely rewarding for a gearhead.

Street legality depends on your state. Here's a guy who got his registered in CA

I'd say go for it.

I usually have the most fun with either:
A) a very powerful rear wheel drive car that can easily light up the rear tires for a small slide each time I power out of a corner (C63, though it is sooo much more) or
B) a car that is slightly underpowered in the sense of you can keep your foot floored most of the time... Thereby giving you more time to just play with it in the corners and perfect the braking points and generally improve your driving skills. Then as you get more comfortable you get a slightly more powerful car. This all said, I think a used 911 GTR ( even RS!) should be a ton of fun. You may not be the fastest but you should have the biggest smile!
