Painting Brake Calipers

Hey guys, I am thinking of getting the brakes done, what is the best method, painting them at a shop with high temp paint, or powder coating them? i've heard that the amg logo can be reapplied with high heat decals, if this is true please verify as well... does anyone have any good shops in the nj area that will do the job?

also... red or yellow? my cars all blacked out.

thanks for the help in advance

thanks a lot! you guys think g2 will leave streaks behind since it's applied with a brush?

I would recommend painting them. If you were in L.A. I would point you to a great shop.

Mine are painted also and it took just shy of 2 hours to get everything done.
After the shop paints the calipers they stick on the decal and spray the clear coat over. Its a fairly simple process.

thanks a lot amg! you think an auto body shop can do the job if I were to give them the paint and they were to do it like you... I'm assuming lift the car, remove the wheels, mask off all the excess areas, and paint away? I was thinking grabbing g2's caliper paint and have them put it in their air gun and paint like you said slap on the decals then clear coat over... I've heard mixed reviews about their paint... I'm going to see what they say since they fix cars not specifically do work like caliper jobs... any feedback will be greatly appreciated, again any shops I'm the NJ/NY area! thanks again! I'll keep you all posted on my final decision! will be done within the month!

thanks helms, from what i have read online about g2's paint, regardless how it's applied it cures into a hard gloss finish, with no visible brush marks... thus... a professional outcome will be shown even if i do it with the brush and on my own, given that i prep the area well and patiently do my work... i will make my decision within the week, but i am probably going to get in touch with the body shop i've dealt with in the past and see how much it would run my to have them spray the brakes with g2's paint in their spray gun... thus get their professionals skills put into action from his painting knowledge and offer me a perfect outcome, along with the amg logo applied w. a decal and painted over... i want it to look as clean, stock, and professional as possible (sorry im a perfectionist!)

No problem man! You pretty much explained the whole process since that is exactly how the shop painted the calipers.
Don't know too much about the G2 paint, but heard good things about them.
What color are you going with?
Red or yellow look awesome on black C63's.

both look amazing, but i think i'm leaning toward the red, it's the color everyone does, but yellow may be too much for me, i love it so much, but i dont know why i feel like i may not be able to cope with it after a while and want to go to red after lol

I used g2 paint on my calipers and had it sprayed. Came out nice and glossy and that's with out clear. I wanted to put on my decals and clear them on, but I didn't find a high temp clear when I did the job. I still need to install my decals, so I'll have to figure out some thing. You will like the g2 paint, very easy to use and very strong. Also stays fairly clean, but I'm using akebono brake pads and not factory, so that probably helps as well. I went with gold, but I was looking for a copper look like this:

how about something different and functional as well? i had rob at needswings ceramic thermal coat my calipers. this provides a thermal barrier between the rotor and pad heat to the fluid. can be tinted in a variety of colors. mine were done in gold. i know red black silver yellow are available

i just paint my calipers couple hrs ago with g2 yellow paint..... that paint is amazing....i just use the foam brush they provided and painted about 3 coats on it....just make sure just read the instruction....also i only use purchase one box of G2 paint...even thought after u mix the hardener and only have half can in it!

Tomorrow or couple days later, i will put the decal on and spray VHT brake caliper clear coat spray paint and i will post the pics later!

Note: First pics is only first coat....total hrs spent include clean the calipers, remove pads and hardware....about 2 to 3 hrs
Also i will re-take the pics later when it is full cure(close-up)

Very nice.
Did you get on the AMG decal yet? Also does the G2 paint kit come with extra clear coat?

thanks 320 dreamer, how much does this process cost, the yellow doesn't seem to be as bright as i think it would with paint

klnh, thanks a lot, i think i MAY just do them on my own O

dacatz, you made me jump the gun! i'm gunna do them on my own now like you, with the decals and vht clear after i'm done... way i see it.. for w/e reason i mess up... then i go to the shop

roswell... i've decided to do red, and if you and jeffDL want to wait a week, i'm probably going to order the paint and do it by labor day weekend, and will try to get a diy with some pictures for you guys, looks like the outcome is incredible even w/ their sponge brush, like claimed i can't see any noticeable brush marks.. amazing!

as always thanks a lot fellas!

Exactly agree with u....if anything mess up, then let the shop wet sand the calipers and pay for the extra can of G2 (cost me $55 cdn...special price from my friend)and re-do everything....

Here are some tips/ my recommendation

Before remove anything....i will take lots of pics of each wheel....(i.e. pads, hardwares location, wires routing, decals...etc..)

1.) Remove pads, hardwares and disconnect the sensors for pads (if possible)

2.) Mask the bleeder screws and area u might paint over

3.) Buy extra brake cleaner to clean the calipers first (like 2 to 3 cans) then afterward use the G2 brake cleaner to rise off (seems like g2 brake cleaner degrease much stronger but not enough to clean all four very dirty calipers)

4.) Get a second foam brush in case the one u use is damage during the process

5.) for the tight area, u can use paint brushes which the kids use (black wooden long handle with white hair and u can pick it up in dollar store)....

6.) read the instruction about open the hardener. the cap is super tight and i have follow instruction to open it (rinse the cap with hot water for couple minutes)

7.) mix the hardener and wait for 15mins for the hardener to react with the paint

8.) Start painting the rear caliper first...because i think lot of ppl with look more closely on the front caliper rather than rear (first attempt is always a little messy) .

9.) make sure thin coat with muilt layers, if there is a eye drop, just use the foam brush to wipe of excess paint asap ...

The instruction told me wait 15 mins b4 second coat...instead of me to wait for 15mins....i rather paint the rest of the calipers and then i go back and start my second coat!

One important fact u have to know..... the paint in the mix can will start to harden in about little more than 2 hrs...therefore u can only use it once after the hardener is mix!

For more info, goto g2 website for instruction and direction of how to use this paint

Tomorrow i will try to take better pics of the calipers to let u see how smooth it is!

For the color, i will paint something which is more stand out....since there is factory red calipers for the late 2010 model (Can be compare if parked side by side)....if i own a black car, i will try to paint orange, yellow or lime green (if u accept this color)...due to the fact that u want to show or appreciate from someone that u drive a C63 and something u have done yourself...rather than ppl walk by and just treat like a regular C-class. Again...this is what i think.. u can choose what color u want for your car!

Enjoy!
