Running too hot? Oil temp average 220F - 240F+. Yes another oil temp thread.

Yet another oil temp question. Searching through old posts I can see its been discussed many times before.

2012 C63 P31 sedan, stock, just cat back Eisenmann exhaust.

Outside temp anywhere from 50F - 70F.

Transmission in C mode, if I drive around like an old lady for 15 minutes I'm at 220F+. It's never below 220F.

Transmission in S (or S+) mode, 230F - 240F.
Some light spirited driving will always yield the secondary engine fan turning on after 15 minutes (sounds like a vacuum cleaner)

Transmission in M. 240F+. Fan screaming like a vacuum cleaner.

Back in November I did some runs with xtyper and we ran our cars pretty hard. His 2011 C63 was a good 20F degrees cooler then my car and never had the fan come on.

After every run I was 240F+ and had the fan screaming.

How to explain the huge 20F difference between xtyper's C63 and mine when we did the multiple roll runs?

Took it by the dealership last month, they claim they did a couple "hot laps" around the block and temps looked normal. Oil level looked normal.

Anything to worry about? or are these really normal temps?

Just curious, any insight appreciated.

I'm always running 215 - 245...usually closer to 225 235.

Seems normal to me...

Alrasheed1991, I noticed in your sig that you have carbon ceramic brakes. Since when did MHP start selling CC rotors?
Mind posting a pic of your car?

My car usually runs around 210 to 215.. but the last 2 weeks, the temps have been jumping around between 220 and 231.... and the temps have been cold.... I'm worried that my cooling system may be flaking out...

Average for me is 220f, in all modes, my 2011. I realize that our cars get hotter during traffic. The more congested, the hotter.

Your car runs hotter oil than mine which is usually 204-220F. I once saw 245F on a mountain road on snow ice I could not overcome. With the synthetic there should be no concern up to 250 260F IMO.

Hello

I am new here and my question is this.

I am wondering how you all know your Oil Temperatures. Usually we refer to Coolant Temperatures.

Do you all have OIL TEMP Gauges? Do you also know what your coolant temperatures are? I ask this because I am curious as to how close the two temperatures are to each other in relative terms.

Thank you so much in advance

After destroying an AC ride around lawn mower I ventured into the rich jungle of oil data The lawnmower ran 300F worst case. I found that the SAE cats have a chart which shows doomsday temp called "flash." Anyway it's out at 390F on 10-30 oil - the oil is vaporized and ignites. Oil temp gauges typically go to 300-325F. Sumps should run above 200F to drive off moisture. The synthetics are made for high temps. The C63 probably has an oil thermostat to keep it hot. Worry at about 280F and running hotter without cool off. IMO

Your engine will go into limp mode way before you are at risk for temperature problems. Doesn't sound like you have an issue.

The oil temp and coolant temp are listed under the AMG menu on the screen inside the speedometer.

enochroot,

It's not a secondary engine fan you hear. It's the oil cooler fan located on the passenger side behind the bumper. As it tries to cope with the extrememly hot engine oil.

Have them check your thermostat. My car never ever goes above 215-217 in normal driving and I went through 3 hot 110plus degrees summers in Tucson, AZ.

Back to topic. My normal temp. in this season varies from 212F-215F @ 88F-95F weather temp. ( I'm avoiding using the car from morning till sunset where temp. raises to 110F minimum )

In a hard run it goes up to 224F and then cools down within minutes

Highest oil temp been reached is 252F due to hard drive.

I ran into an issue today where my car decided to go into limp mode. I immediately checked my oil temp and it was 277 F. I couldn't downshift or anything.

I need to bring my car into the shop to make sure the outside temp gauge is correct because it seems too high, but today had to be over 100 F and I had the air conditioning on. As soon as I turned the A/C off the temp dropped to 274 F and I could downshift again.

From there it stayed around 266 F for the rest of the trip.

Maybe there is something else going on with the car because it didn't do much better on the ride home tonight when the temps were in the low 70's.

Wow.. 277 is DEFINITELY the highest I have ever heard of...
In the short time that I've had my 2012 (1700 miles), I tend to see it get up to the high 240's.. 247 or 248 being the highest (of course while driving pretty hard in short bursts in S+ or M modes) and even those temps start bugging me out where I'll tone it down until it drops to at least 240...
(Yes, the fan is blowing or whistling like craZy as well)..

That said, have you or anyone else ever noticed that the other gauge below it
(I think it's the water temp stays at 199 degrees, no higher or lower, while the oil temp is going up and down??)

I'm not a scientist or a mechanic, but why is that???

btw, good luck w your issue and keep us posted
