How to do Change Air Filter on your C63 at Home!
Step 1, Open engine Bay
Remove front plastic engine cover piece, it's just held in by clips. It pops right off.
Remove the 5 torx screws from each air box located in the red circle
Torx bits look like this, I believe it's a T25
This is the torx set I got, (you'll want to invest in a torx set since all German Cars are retarded and require torx fasteners everywhere.)
Remove old air filter, install new filter, reverse of installation

Based on your procedure, you did not loosen the large hose clamps?
Nor did you mention removing the electrical connections to the air flow sensors.
Also, take the opportunity to vacuum out the bottom air box, it will be full of dirt. Also put some tape to block the opening that allows hot air from the engine compartment to come in.
I nit pick, but only because I have done it so many more times. 105k and going.
