oil filter element question
i am looking to buy some oil filter elements for DIY oil changes. i found this list:
https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,c...,parttype,5340
does anyone have any opinion on which would be best? and i thought OEM was Mann, isn't it? and i also heard that it's better to use the "polyester" filters instead of the paper ones. thoughts on that one?
thanks, guys.

Use OEM from dealer (if have them special order in from MB even if on shelf). while they are MANN filters, there have been counterfeit filters roaming around and they crush like an accordion under pressure. these have been coming in with matching parts numbers and markings, just beware.

Depends on how long you go between changes. Paper elements won't hold up as long as the polyester fleece ones. Every 5-6k miles you should be fine with paper filters. If you're looking to keep to 'MB-spec' oil changes (ie 10-15k miles) then you need the polyester fleece one.

Max, I just stumbled upon another auto parts store that carries the Hengst filter along with a variety of top tier oils. CQ in Chatsworth (not sure if affiliated with CarQuest APs) has Redline, Amsoil, M1, RoyalP, etc. I spotted CQ as I was leaving O'Rielly with the RP I ordered (yesterday). I picked up the Hengst filter from them (impatient, didn't wait for the ebay one). $20.71 after tax.
Speaking of O'Rielly, I also ordered the Mityvac Evacuator (MV7201) from them. $99, won't find it cheaper anywhere else.

The Hengst E149H filter is paper. With the various German cars I've owned I've never heard or read that amongst Hengst, Mann and Mahle one is better than the other. I buy from Pelican Parts and they carry all three brands.

The Hengst filter is fleece. Thats what it says on their website, the reason that I avoided the rest (Wix, Fram, others are paper).
I'm holding one right now, definitely fleece.

Is this the same filter? Appears so
<$8

Mann and Mahle are fleece also
Mann developed the technology
Looks like paper, bright white, thin and 'fuzzy'
Automotive Oil Filter, Mann + Hummel (Germany)
Introduced in September 2003, this new oil filter is described as “the world’s first fully synthetic oil filter element for automotive applications.” The filter material uses a polyester fleece, which is up to 15 times more resistant to aging than cellulose. The two-layered filter medium consists of a support and drainage layer as well as an active filter layer.

That looks like the one, but at that price I would have to question "authenticity". China produces counterfeit Hengst filters. Hengst won a lawsuit allowing them to destroy 200k Chinese "Hengst" filters found in Malta.
Mann, Mahle, Hengst, all good.

Now that it's been brought up, I'm going to check my eBay filter against the one from CQ.
The Chinese usually mess up font and, in some cases, spelling/spacing. The packaging will be noticeably different, in one way or another.
I'm going to pit "filter vs filter" also.

So the fleece is fuzzy or pressed smooth like paper? I'll have to look at mine more closely. I'm sure it's genuine but it sure looks like paper...but it's identical in color to the photo in the link.

Should be really bright white, almost bleached like printer paper
Should have 2 layers and an internal plastic support/cage
But should have a little texture or fuzz

Good to know, thx. I'm going to call Pelican on Mon to see if they have/can get it.
