Front tire noise when backing up - normal?
I'm newer to the C63 game and have a 2014. Question to see if anyone gets a horrible noise from turning sharp? Example is pulling out driveway with cold tires, front sounds like it's going to break off when turning sharp. Wondering if this is the tires skipping? I have super low miles so still have OE conti's on there. When warm they seem fine... Any ideas?
Also, I read that this is fairly common with AMG and some Porsches but it sounds so brutal. Thanks!

I've noticed something similar...
For me it coincides with turning my wheel as i'm backing out of the driveway from a cold start - as it has been pretty much since i bought the car in late Oct. I have a bit of a curb, and to me it sounds like the tire is snapping as it clears the curb and slaps the pavement. I now back straight out of the driveway slowly then turn the wheel and i do not have the sound.
To me, it is not a mechanical sound coming from the front end, lets say, but the cold tire. May not be at all what you are experiencing, but thought I'd share.

Same here. Like the tires skip when backing up with the wheel turned sharply.

Glad I found your post. I just took delivery of a 2016 S63C4 and I have the same issue backing out of my garage. front wheels bang and jerk (like it's an old pick up truck in "dumb" 4wd". my wife has a BMW XDrive and her car never did this. it seems more than tires loosing grip...it's a bang. and it does seems to get less noticeable when it's warm.

I've figured out how to turn in a way to minimize how often this happens but I'll forget and it scares the sh*t out of me!
Thanks for the replies.

I attributed it to this being a car tuned for going fast not slow speed tight maneuvering.

When I back out of my driveway and I am turning - as my front tire goes over the curb, I get a bit of a dragging sensation/sound. With out researching it, I presumed it had something to do with the Electronic Stability Program because the front tires were turning at different speeds. One was going faster because it was traveling down the curb and the other one was still on the flat part of the driveway. Here is a video description of how it will apply the brake on just one wheel or decrease engine power, etc.

I think I could feel the same thing your describing in my 2012 C63 and found it disconcerting. I don't remember having this sensation in my 2010. It definitely went away when I lowered the car on KW-V3. The car felt much more relaxed backing up and turning the wheel hard over. Something to do with the new suspension settings in the LCI-FL cars.

I'd be willing to bet that it has to do with the Ackerman of the steering being set up more for high speed or track work and that one wheel is turned a little too much at full lock causing it to drag and stutter a little.

Mine is a horrible banging and jerking. it scares you. I feel I'm hurting the car. the first time it happened, i thought i hit something. it's embarrassing and aggravating to take someone out and try and explain this...I can't accept this is how they should work...no way every other manufacture can get this right but MB! It's taking enjoyment out of each drive...

mine does this when backing out of the driveway on a very cold morning or if its cool out and the cars sat for a week and ive turned close to lock...it was when i turned the wheel to straighten up to drive onto the road from exiting the driveway.
Got worried at first but it only seems to do it in one of those two scenarios and funny enough if i turn the wheel faster to straighten the wheels it doesnt do it

Mine does this occasionally when backing up at full steering lock. I has initially thought I hit a block of ice or pothole on the parking lot. Scared me and my wife. I went to look and nothing. Now I never backup on full steering lock.

There is a very simple explanation for this. When you are reversing with the steering at full-lock or near full-lock, the angle of the tire puts it in position to rub on the inside of the front fender, and since the tire is rolling backwards, the tire can catch and make all kinds of bad sounds, I have done it often enough on my C63 to where the tire has actually caught the inside lip of my fender and pulled it down/outward a bit.

Mine did the same noise when I tried to get by with summer tires in cold months. Anything in the 40's or under would make that noise like tires skipping. That's exactly what it is. Summer tires have a temperature they are supposed to operate in. Had winters put on and guess what no more noise when backing out of the driveway. When It was warm outside didn't have the noise either with the summers.

interesting! I hope this is the cause. It's interesting you solved the problem with different tires... what model and year is your car?

I don't want anyone unintentionally mislead that might have this issues. Maybe there are such problems with summer tires in the winter, but there is no way my issue stems from cold tires not gripping or flat spots. Something is wrong. This is a single timed "bang" that vibrates through the car. Even after driving for 20 minutes, my car will still do this. I have a 4wd truck and own/owned many different cars; my issue is not coming from tires.
