Talking ABC Pump Install Tip / Trick / Hint

Finally got my new ABC pump installed. Hardest part was getting the banjo fittings onto the bottom. Bad enough that access to the bolt is impeded by a metal (and immovable) coolant line that made it hard enough to get out. Hard as I tried, I couldn't get the threads lined up when putting it back in. Fortunately (... or not, arguably), I had completely removed those 2 hoses for cleaning and inspection. So in a fit of desperation, i decided to attach the hoses to the pump FIRST (albeit without tightening the nut so as to leave some play in the banjo fittings). Then I fed the lines back down into the engine bay, installed the pump with the bolts in the front and rear, then tightened up the bolt that holds the banjo fittings to the pump. Hint #2, best way to access that bolt is from underneath the car, using a long extension and swivel. There is a black plastic shield on the subframe that is in the way, but this can be pushed aside and put back into place easily enough. Many many thanks to all the members who gave me advice along the way, with extra special thanks to WellwynNick and DrMatt. If you are planning on doing any ABC work, I strongly recommend that you read Nick's write-up, which also references or links to helpful posts from others. Great stuff!

Great idea. Hopefully I never get the pleasure of replacing my pump though!

Ha! Looks like it's just a matter of time, Doc. If I had to do it again, it wouldn't take nearly as long. That's a monster of a car you've got, BTW

Yeah, those banjo lines are very difficult.

Fitting them before fitting the pump is a great idea.

Can I add that to my ABS Suspension thread?

I also found fitting the power steering line out challenging too. On one occasion I thought I fitted everything right, then as soon as I started the engine, it started leaking PAS fluid, so I have to do it all over again.

Cheers, Nick

Nick - Of course! Getting an idea into your incredible thread (without which I'd have been lost) is like getting into the hall of fame
