2009 CL63 AMG - Steering Issue (not sure?)
Hi everyone,
one month ago I've bought a late 2009 CL63 AMG with 64k miles from a Mercedes Benz dealer in Munich, Germany. The car came with an additional 2 year warranty under "Junge Sterne" program.
Well, I drove the car for a month and put additional 2k miles on it. Everything seemed perfect until today, when first issue appeared.
It came out of nowhere during rather relaxed city driving. The issue is some weird moan noise. The noise depends solely on RPM, with more RPM there is more noise. I can also feel a lot more vibration in the steering. I assume it must be either steering pump, or something associated with the steering. Interesting thing is that steering is not affected in terms of easiness to turn, it is soft as normally, also when I make turns - it does not affect the noise, only RPM does. It just tends to vibrate a lot more even when I go in a straight line without making any turns.
I've checked the engine bay with a flashlight and there is no leaks anywhere as far as I could see. Underneath the car (after 1 hour of standing there) there was nothing.
I let it rest for one hour and went for another drive. For first 5-10 minutes everything was fine, but as soon as I drove more than 30MPH it start all over again and stayed there. Again, I cannot tell if it depends on the speed, probably not as later on, it didn't matter how was I went, it just stayed there.
I've tried to make a few videos of the noise, but since it's an iPhone 5, I assume it won't be very distinguishable. Check it out for me, please.
I would greatly appreciate any information, opinions or ideas on what it might be. I will get to dealership not sooner than on Tuesday and would really like to know what happened to it before that.
Thanks a lot!
Videos of my issue:
1. Idle - you can hear the noise when I rev the engine
2. Driving - the noise is there when I step on it a bit

ABC Fluid Level - almost full
Steering Fluid Level - after one day of no driving it was at 20C MAX
All fluids are there + there is no leak anywhere in the engine as far as I can see + no fluids underneath the car.
Could it be a steering pump pulley?

I am taking the car to a dealer on Monday, we will see what they say.
I just wonder, should I drive it or rather not?

Interested to hear what it is doing this. I also have a '09 CL63 with 30k miles and at idle with radio off there are small buzz, hum, whirr type noises that are momentary but do repeat but would not be heard once driving.

Was at the dealer, it is an ABC pump. It is slowly going away.
I am going to get this covered by a warranty in Germany, but first possible date is 28.5. Will have to wait until then.

I was at the dealer for my problem too they told me it was my pump too but when I went to a local shop they found out it just the accumulator so instead of change the whole whole pump I changed the accumulator for way less money , but oh well if u still have warranty then why not hang the whole pump

Well, that’s really funny. It’s 2022 and now I have S63 Coupe. I liked the CL63 more actually. And I think I have the steering issue again on the S63 )
This time it is the slight vibration in the steering wheel, and some noise when turning corners, other than that nothing. I shall investigate more.
It’s funny that I was searching for “s63 steering issues” and found my own thread from 2015. Dammit, time flies.

Sounds like it's the pulsation dampener that's attached to the pump itself. I had the same issue on my 65 about a year ago. Replaced the dampener and the noise never returned and the pump is as healthy as ever. MB had released a service bulletin for that issue years ago. Also, don't just replace the pump without seeing what kind of pressure it's putting out. That will tell you if the pump is healthy or not.
