Fuel Guage - Fuel Float - Failure

A few months ago after I'd fill up w/gas my fuel guage would stick on full tank long after I had used up alot of the fuel in the tank. When it did move below full, it would move up and down at random between full, half, three quarter and empty, sit still some times, and then start to move again all over the dial. Then one day I ran out of gas when the guage and the display still indicated that the tank had 2.2 gallons of fuel in it. I took it to the dealer who said they found an open circuit in the fuel system and fixed the problem (by the way, in the course of bestowing their complimentary car wash on my ride the dealer cracked my Lorinser DTM Edition front spoiler so that it ended up in two - yes two - pieces. That'a a story for another post) So with the fuel guage fixed, and apparently working properly in that it no longer moved all over the dial, I drove happily off (two weeks later when the body shop was done with my spoiler). Then when I got to the half full mark of my first tank of the post-dealer fix fuel, the enging stopped. I filled the tank with fuel, and all was well, but as soon as it got below 8 gallons it would stop running. So now, the car runs fine as long as there's at least 8 gallons in the tank. When it gets below 8 gallons, it stops running like it's out of gas. Has anyone else experienced this problem????

It's probably faulty fuel sensor.

I've changed mine twice under warranty and it's broken again.

Now, I don't have warranty and haven't fixed it. Wonder how much it would be to fix it.

You would think this is a recall, since the equipment is defective.

If you take it in to get it fixed, make sure the fuel tank is almost empty. They have to drain it so no use throwing away good gasoline. This is a very common problem of this era of Mercedes and not just CLKs. Since all the ones replaced on my Mercedes (3 or 4 on three different cars) were under warranty, I did not realize how expensive a job it was.
