2008 CLK550
Good morning, Today I started up my car to see the P0015 error code. Does it come and go? For some reason, with the Bluetooth OBD2 thing I have it will not let me reset the codes and turn off the light. My VIN is WDBTK72F58T090966
Where does my car fit in the grand scheme of things? Hopefully beyond the problems....
Thank you so much in advance,
Jeff B

Well, with a MY2006 M272 engine, it's in the range, and those codes are the tell-tale symptom, so I'd say the timing chain idler sprocket on your balance shaft is deteriorating. If you have a really good relationship with your MBZ dealer, you might get some help from them and MBUSA under their "goodwill" policy, but otherwise, you are likely on your own. Dealer rices ar $4K-$5K for the job, but you may find an indy who will do it for less.

I had the codes p0016 and p0017 pop up.. tried to erase them but they won't go away.. anyone ever have this problem? Is it something i can fix myself? vin number WDBTJ56H96F186534 . Any help or guidance will be appreciated.

Looking at '08 R350

We have an 07 R350 we're ditching due to the balance shaft issue. But LOVE this model.

Considering an '08. Vin 4JGCB65E98A084755.

Should we go for it?

Are there any other issues that should steer us away from this car?

Your MY2006 CLK350 has an M272 engine and it is "in the range" and those codes are the tell-tale symptom of balance shaft sprocket failure. If you have the ability to pull and engine and do some moderate-level mechanic work, then you can DIY. If not, expect to pay the dealer $5K+ if they won't cover it under goodwill or closer to $4K for a good indy. If you bought the car from an MBZ dealer and use them for service, then you might have a shot at goodwill coverage.

That's a MY2008 - no worries. Only MY2007 needs to be checked as half are affect. Any M272 or M273 before that is in the affected range, any after that is not.

MY2008's and later seem to be fairly reliable in terms of engine and transmission issues. No worries about the balance shaft, and the common turbine speed sensor problem with the transmission was fixed by them, too.

1/2 of an entire model year's engines affected and no recourse with the manufacturer? I read that the class action suit in NJ was tossed and from what I can gather on the internet, the suit in CA is still in process but for the M272 engine only because the plaintiffs vehicles did not have M273 engines. And MB want the CA plaintiffs included in the NJ suit.

If anyone has addl info regarding the class action, it'd be good to know.

i agree... its consumer theft at its finest. if anyone could include me on the lawsuit or point me in that direction i would greatly appreciate it as my car loan is about 3k more than the repair it would need.

does anyone know of a bypass that i can turn off the light so i can at least pass inspection? i was wondering if pulled the sensor out, disconnect the batt for a while and just let it sit without plugging it back in would the light come back on.

SDS can disable the MIL, but it also won't illuminate during starting, which I suppose that your inspector will look for (in order to make certain that the light is functional)

Thank you Rudeney for all the information.

I'm trying to help the forum understand a couple things so correct me if i'm wrong. If I misinterpreted it, correct me please.

Step 1:
Run the VIN on this site http://www.neoriginal.ru/cat/mb/

(use google translate to change Russian to English or whichever you prefer)

Step 2: Look at the output below:

E 350
Description of the model: E SEDAN
Model Code: 211,056
Catalog: 65H
Engine: 272 964 30 340 963 <<here is the relevant information

Conditions for affected engine(s) are:
272 30 468993 and below
273 30 088611 and below

-If codes P0016 & P0017 show up on OBD II reader, then you will most likely have the balance shaft issue, if not, then you might need to replace the magnets

-Issues most likely to occur prior to 100k Miles

-Some MB dealers may or may not honor of "goodwill repair"

Added notes:
NJ lawsuit - MB wins
CA lawsuit - still in effect? where can we find updates for this?

That pretty much sums it up. Note that OBDII codes P0017 and P0016 are generic codes that actually translate to more than one (each) MBZ DTC. Its DTCs 1200 and 1208 that are the balance shaft symptoms, do before declaring it so, use the visual inspection method:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w203...detection.html

Also, 100K problem-free miles is not an all-clear. There are reports of failures after that. It's possible that ALL of the engines in the range are defective, it just depends on how quickly they fail. Since the engines in question are only between 8 and 10 years old, we aren't seeing any with really high mileage (say 200K+). Of course all of these sprockets in any car will eventually fail (nothing lasts forever!).

That's a MY2006 - all of those will be "in the range" for potential balance shaft failure. The problem was not identified and resolved until midway through the MY2007 build. Keep in mind a very small percentage have failed, so it's not a death sentence if you own one. But, unless you are a gambler, I'd not buy one in the range.

PURCHASED - SLK 200 YR 2008 - UPGRADE - Australia - Can I get vin check pleasee

Hello ALL

How exciting - I finally bought my dream car! WOW Factor. Its so beautiful.

Firstly, her name is "Strudelum yum: - ha!

Gun metal - with red trimmings inside with only 69000 km on the clock. Shes in perfect condition, interior and exterior. She has just enough power for my liking. No prob with the convertible, she drives like a dream - all up to date on services by MB
.
After much research and several test drives, I decided on the SLK 200.

The SLK 350 is awesome but just a little too powerful for me.

I do have some questions though. I love all the features on the SLK, but is there a setting to tell me just how many kms I have left (reserve level) the manual says 9 litres??? the reserve level flashes just a little under the quarter mark, surely you have more than 9 litres left? right?

Bluetooth - its blue tooth ready, however the car did not come with the puck. I've researched on line, and my goodness there almost $400! Any body selling 1? am willing to buy.

Rear vision mirror - according to hubby its big and blocks out a lot of the windscreen, is there an aftermarket slim version? I don't think its that bad, but the MAN does.

The brake calipers are grey/white - yuk. If I have them colour coated will this void warranty? I will ring the warranty company, just thought that all you guru's out there would know a lot about this stuff.

And the dreaded question for Rodney is, does my car fall into potential car problems - WDB 1714452F201472

Also, any cheat codes out there ? i.e resetting options etc.

Thanking you all in advance

Cheers
Mercedes
