2007 C230 balance shaft issue with this car?

Is this a CLK problem or is it with C230 as well?

WDBTJ75J45F124036 is a CLK500 with the M113 engine - no balance shaft worries with that one.

WDBUF87J26X187477 is a MY2006, so yes, it's in "the range" - M272 engine #086466.

Thanks much, Rodney.

My car is in the range (M272 engine #086466).

Is there any known rate to have the balance shaft problem?

Only MBZ knows for sure. I would say it's 5% or less, based simply on the reports of it in the online forums, and based on the fact that it's not even a blip on the radar of popular review sites (Consumer Reports, cars.com, Edmunds, etc.).

My advice on this has always been that if you own one, then either sell it if you can't stand the thought of it, or just keep on eye on it - get an inexpensive OBDII scanner and check periodically for P0016 and/or P0016 codes. If buying, don't roll the dice - there are too many great used cars out there to worry about the potential of a $5k++ repair. That is, unless you get a deal you can't refuse that would make the repair worthwhile.

Balance shaft issue?

Looking at 2006 CLK 350. VIN WDBTK56HX6F192288. Is this engine in the range for balance shaft or any other issues? Thanks in advance.

Hello Rodney, is there any preventive method or maintenance?

The fact that my car is in the range and the $6k replacement cost of the balance shaft make me very nervous

Current mileage of my car is about 99,700 and has no issue so far. If there is any method/advice to reduce the chance of the balance shaft issue, I will take it.

Thank you much again!

All MY2005 and 2006 MBZ's with M272 V6 and M273 V8 engines will be in the range for potential balance shaft failure. MY2007 is the only year where it may or may not have an engien int eh range. Your's has M272 #298178, which is int he range.

Yes, if you simply leave the car in the garage and keep the engine shut off, it will never fail. Seriously, there really is nothing preventative that can be done. If the balance shaft was one that was improperly forged, it will be soft and it will wear away as the timing chain runs against it. It really has nothing to do with engine speed, lubrication, or anything other than use. Keep in mind that only a small percentage have failed so far, and most of those exhibited symptoms very early. Mine started throwing codes at 25K miles. It seems that it's more rare that they fail after 100K miles. You'll see a few reports of failure around 100K, but most are much earlier. I won't say yours is in the clear, but each accumulating mile would seem to lower the odds of failure.

2007 E350 - Balancer Shaft?

Hello,

could you check if WDBUH87X27X210515 is in the affected range for balancer shaft problems?

If so, what is the current procedure to get this fixed? How does the dealer figure out, if the sporcket/shaft is bad?
Who usually covers the cost?

Thank you,

Fabian

No worries on a CLK500 - it has the M113 engine which never had any balance shaft problems. The balance shaft issue is with the M272 (CLK350) and M273 (CLK550) engines. My only concern with a MY2005 CLK500 would be that it has an early version of the 722.9 7-speed transmission which tends to be more problematic.

No worries with a MY2009 - it has M272 engine #31-172301 which is way beyond any balance shaft issues.
