01 CLK 55 vs 430
I've been looking for a nice 430 coupe and in the process found a CLK 55. What should I look out for in buying a 70K mile example. Is the AMG a decent daily driver? How much should I be paying for a nice example?
thanks

I have a 2001 clk55 and have loved it. They make great daily drivers. Overall they are very solid cars. Any car this old is going to have small issues, but they can be dealt with. I feel they make good cars for a decent home mechanic. If you are going to depend on the dealer for service they can get very expensive. My car is higher mileage and was a buy back at some point. I paid 6k. Nice lower mileage cars may go into the low teens.

Love mine as a DD. Smooth on the road, so relaxed and quiet at 80mph that you barely know the engine is on but tap the pedal to move through traffic or around obstacles and she'll snap your head back in a heartbeat. Bought mine in the low teens with 56k miles on the clock just about two years ago, she just ticked over 80k miles and rides just as smooth as day one.
To me there is no contest AMG v non AMG, as long as the AMG has a clean carfax, gets a clean bill of health from an independent dealer doing a real PPI and has a good maintenance history go for the AMG. BTW this isn't some snooty AMG bias, I have been to Affalterbach and watched them build engines there. The one man one engine thing is real. Once I saw a guy build a section of the engine, check and test it, not like something, tear what he just built back down and start over again until he was satisfied to take it to the next stage, I was sold on their way of doing things. As has been said there are small things on a car of this age but as long as you do preventive maintenance and take care of the car it should with any luck at all take care of you. Good luck.
