Why I don't track my Black Series...(Modded Porsche Cup inside!!)

Well, about 3 weeks ago I took the plunge and went for what is by far the fastest thing around a track I will have been in. I competed in the koni challenge in GS for a splitsecond and got to see just how amazing the cup cars were that were in GT and ever since then have been addicted. Well, now that I want to go compete in GT, I figured I needed to move to something more that speed and found this absolute BEAST available for sale... Hopefully after a year of practice and getting to know eachother, Ill put down some times and get my sponsors together and go back in. (FWIW, this thing apparently put down a 1:55 at vir by an older non-pro gentleman, so this thing has some SERIOUS speed in it

What do I find out about this car...oh, it has triple adjustable ohlins suspension, weighs 2585 lbs, has a nearly all carbon body, performance friction brakes (gave me sticker shock to look at the cost of those stoppers...)supercup gearbox (so top track speed of around 175)...and a DYNAMO of an engine...a 457 DYNOED hp PMNA upgraded engine with redline at 8800 rpm.

Car has a ton of cool tricks inside as it turns out the Flying Lizards built it (apparently the current crew chief oversaw the project) and competed in the 2004-5 and 6 Daytona 24 hrs (pre the engine upgrade) and actually sat on pole for gt in one of the latter years.

Without further adieu...

AND WHERE IT ALL GOES DOWN...(you can check out the adjustable sways right next to the drivers seat too)

anyway, the black series makes a fantastic sportscar that you can take on the track...but why track a sportscar when you can track a racecar?

Well put!
I've been pondering that question of late, but I'm certain (much to my chagrin) that my answer is not a Cup car!

Make sure you get some video and data capture, I'd love to see it!

Word has it that TRG will have an arrive and drive stable of Porsches very soon at the new NJMP as they now have a shop at NJMP.

I was looking at one of the old TRG cars that I was told is an old Andy Lally GT Porsche.

Exactly - and about $4000/weekend to run it. If that's what you want to do and have the time and money - great. There are lots of these older cup cars floating around and the initial purchase price is nothing when you compare it to the operating costs if you really want to be competitive.
That's a great looking car - congrats and good luck campaigning it !!

ya, those that know me know I dont like any time going by on the black part...therefore, I end up just wanting to focus on my driving. Is it incredibly expensive? Yes. Is it worth it and a punch in the gut, HELL YA! Tracking street cars only does so much for me anymore, I know there is something that COULD be done to make it faster...the racecars dont really have that. Its all you.

The weekends do end up being like 3k though 6k yes...but that includes tires that I burn out after 2 days anyway (hoosier r100s), so about 1.60 to 3.2k of that has always been there depending on how many tires I decide I want to burn through in a weekend (of course mixed with brakes and rotors etc). I dont like things that are past their prime usage, and will pay for having everything as optimal as possible

btw, normal engine/tranny service interval is 100 HOURS for this cup give or take 15 hrs and ranges in cost from 15-25k for rebuilds. Honestly, many track users after the same amount of time in normal street sportscars have some similar repairs they need performed. Porsche says 60-75 if heavily raced(and god knows they just want your money sooner) I dont know where that top end at 15-20 hrs is coming from but I guess its good Im not in a viper if thats the case!

The top end rebuild Jimmy quoted is accurate in regards to being competitive and keeping your motor healthy. After 25 hours of use, you will start to lose horsepower. Sure, you can run the motor above and beyond that...but you will not be competitive and your lap times will suffer. I spent 3 years with a Grand Am team running 996 cup cars as well as M3 GT's and the final year running DP's. Normal wear and tear items are just the beginning of the cash burning...stuffing it into a wall (which I hope never happens to you) will push your operating costs much higher.
Remember - at the end of the day...a race car is simply a tool for getting a job done. No different than a spanner wrench or floor jack - just more expensive.

It's an expensive hobby, especially if you want to be competitive. It's one thing to buy it, but quite another to feed that beast. The people that I know all got out of it and buying a seat in one of the TRG cars at the 24 hours of Daytona instead. No hassle, just arrive and drive ......

No Ill be up here at Pocono. I need to shake the car down first and pocono will be a good way to do it as I can hit topspeed and there isnt much trouble anywhere around the track. Its going to take some re-acclimation to higher corner speeds (like 10-15 mph faster in a sharp corner and probably more in a faster corner). That said, after that its watkins and VIR for me!
