Battery change with under hood battery connections in place
If I attach a battery via jumper cables to the under hood battery connections (used to jump start vehicle) while I swap out the battery in the back seat will I maintain all of the electrical settings for sunroof, windows, radio, etc.?
This is on my 2001 E320.

Frankly - use the opportunity to RESET the settings AND...
1) reset steering angle sensor
2) radio code
3) reset each window and sunroof
the AND... do a forum search and do a ECU/tranny reset after reconnecting the the new battery..

Having 2 cars in the garage side by side and HD jump cable this is how I did it couple of times.
Not that resetting windows and steering is a big deal, but I had radio code in my home office written on pink slip, so it would take longer to get it.
Just make sure key out of ignition, very good clamping on jump cable and don't touch ground with positive battery cable.

thanks brooktre, that sounds much safer. when I spoke with my mechanic he cautioned me about the approach I planned to take as the battery cables would be 'hot' and any contact could be harmful to the electronics.

I connected my battery charger in 2 amp mode when I changed my battery And didn't lose the settings. Yes it's true that the battery cables are hot but just be careful not to let them touch anything. It was easy.
Alternatively its it's not a big deal if it resets
