2006 E350 horn problem

having an issue with my horns. with the key in position 1, i can hit the horn button (steering wheel) and the horn will sound. put the key in position 2 the horn sounds automatically all by itself. pulled the horn relay and repeated the above test....key in position 1 horn will not sound. key in position 2 horn sounds automatically. needless to say i am stumped!

it has to be your sam. Thats where it gets power and ground from, your clock spring is what all this stuff is tied to. By it going off immediately in position 2 tells me its getting unwanted actuation at all times..... then again your clockspring or steering column module could be faulty.... you could pull the airbag off and see if that makes a difference. by that i mean loosen the t-30 screws that hold it to the steering wheel then put key in position 2....

pulled the airbag off and turned key to pos 2 and horn sounded. went one step further and pulled the steering wheel and angle sensor housing from the column. turned key to pos 2 and the horn sounded. looks like everything points to a bad sam.
my 2 options are buy used or new. will both options require programming? if it does will the car still drive where i can take it in to get programmed?

When my front SAM was replaced it had to be reprogrammed it was at the mechanics at the time and couldn't be driven from what I recall.

How about removing the power from the horns themselves (there's two, IIRC) then you can drive the car as needed to replace/program the SAM.

driver side front sam for sure needs to be scn coded.... important things like country of origin/location options ect. need to be inputted..... buy new from stealership, 1 year unlimited mile warranty.... double check though, may be diff for electronics....

before doing anything though, especially spending money, pull that sam out and test the pin that actuates that horn....
