E550 / E63 BiTurbo: Drive chain fault / tensioner fault / missing check valve
Hello,
a few months ago, I purchased a used ´13 E 550 with the twinturbo engine “M278”. When I started the engine at the dealership, I was not only pretty disappointed about the overall sound (feel free to check my other thread), but also I was shocked about the engine rattle.
So I asked my dealership to check the engine and they were asked by Mercedes Germany (Berlin) to record a sound file. The analysis did not take too long – after approximately one day Berlin advised my dealership to:
1. Replace all tensioners of the drivechain
2. Insert a check valve into the cylinder head to prevent the oil to flow away from the drive chain.
As Videos might say more than thousand words:
Before replacement:
After Replacement:
After publishing my case in a large German forum, quite a few members reported - after checking their engines - similar problems which had been fixed by Mercedes under warranty.
So just make sure, your BiTurbo sounds right…
Greetings from Germany,
Johannes

Very nice post -- smart work, I'm sure this will help a bunch of people
did you have a performance increase/loss with the "fix" ?

Thank you for your comment. Actually I did not experience any power loss. It was just the noise, that drove me crazy.
A side note: A few members of a German forum noted, that the fix lasted only a few months before the noise came back and the tensioners had to be replaced AGAIN. Well, let us hope, that Mercedes found a better solution meanwhile.
