Very sad indeed. As far as women drivers etc, I am willing to say that my wife is a safer driver than I am. No particular group of people is better than others. There are good and bad drivers, period. The same way there are good and bad cooks...

I read that article in the post as well. She blew through 2 stoplights and her speed was estimated at 85mph. Trully a sad situation made worse by children being killed. She was the only one restrained. As far as women being bad drivers, I think statistics prove men are worse drivers than women.

The only time I've ever been rear ended was by a soccer mom driving a minivan. She hit the car behind me with enough force that it slammed into me and I slammed into the car in front of me. Two cars totaled and the one in front of me had heavy bumper damage. All three of use were stopped at a red light and the speed limit on that street was 35 mph.

Interesting resemblance with the accident I caused back in the 80s. Same scenario except I was the person that hit the car in front of me that hit another car! All this at low speeds but the force was enough to total the car in front of me! The reason? Inexperience... I was 18 and was driving too fast for the conditions and failed to notice the traffic was slowing down to a stop. That was because a blond chick was standing on the side of the road waiting so I naturally was paying more attention to her than the road!

The driver has received the worst form of punishment ... staying alive! Hope she will grieve and be remorseful for the rest of her pathetic life, if she has a conscience!

I agree and we should never jump to conclusions.

This is simply tragic!

Here's more to the story (It could be as simple as a pedal stuck on a floor mat.):

"Police didn't release a cause for the crash, but the law-enforcement official said investigators were eyeing speed as a factor. Witnesses told police the Mercedes went through two red lights going east on Atlantic Avenue.

Ms. Okolo told police she couldn't stop the SUV, the official said.

She swerved to avoid a car coming through the intersection at Atlantic Avenue and the Van Wyck service road. The SUV climbed onto the sidewalk, struck a pillar supporting the tracks for the AirTrain to Kennedy International Airport and flipped onto its passenger side, the official said. It came to a rest when its roof struck a tree, the official said.

Surveillance video from a nearby gas station shows a fast-moving black SUV travel through an intersection. A moment later, a startled customer suddenly scurries toward the street.

Ms. Okolo has a clean driving record, the official said. Police don't believe alcohol or drugs played a role."

Wow, very sad. This is only 10 minutes from where I live, crazy. Wouldn't hitting the stop/start (K-go) or turning the key to off work if the pedal was stuck? Or perhaps even switching to N. Curious to find out more details....

It seems odd that anyone would speed at 85 mph on surface streets with multiple passengers including children. i can only think of three possible scenarios, and they are mechanical failure, intoxication, or mania/psychosis. Like you said we should not draw conclusion but i think the three possible scenarios i suggested are the only logical reasons i can think of that would cause the driver to be speeding on surface streets. So sad
