cluster of lights remain on & will not shift from 1st

reading your concern for answers to my 2001 ml. sounds similiar. i would appreciate your insight and apologize for butting in. bas/esp/ets/abs/battery/brake wear/check engine & (red)brake lights all stay on. additionally, will not shift out of 1st gear. ran great prior to letting it sit for approx. 2 months in garage. i pulled all kinds of fuses and relays to see if bad. all ok. when restarting, all lights were out and shifted fine through all the gears. turned ml off and restarted later and back to the same problems as before. tried pulling same fuses and relays but this time it didn't work. i could really use some help. thank you very much!

Angry 2001 ML320 lights & shifter problem

Darkmann: you indicated the last case will lock up the shifter. is that a result of a bad esp control module or esp/bas control unit or are they the same? the lights stay on, (bas/esp, ets, abs, battery, brake worn,as well as, check engine & (red) brake light on the right side. will not shift out of 1st. switched the relay with one next to it, started and all lights were out and it shifted fine through all the gears. when i returned home, turned off ml and restarted, all lights came back on and would not shift out of 1st. took to dealer = abs pump but they did not give me any codes. they said pump runs fine but the internal computer is bad so sending wrong info. to pump and system. i would appreciate your direction. i can do basic repairs ( starters, brakes, hoses etc. oaktree stuff) but electric stumps and scares me. if switches and relays are all that is necessary - can do. if just changing out - can do but need to know what to change. please help!

Here's a report by Jim in Phoenix who fixed a "bad ABS pump" recently. Turned out to be a cold solder connection...

Smile ML320 ABS Pump

I had a similar problem diagnosed as ABS pump failure which the garage advised would need a new pump. After lots of searching on the internet (in order to avoid the incredibly high cost of a new pump) I ended up shipping the pump AND control board to Florida from the UK - the specialist firm fixed what was an electrical fault on the control board and shipped it all back. Total cost was c$500 instead of $2000+..........! All worked fine - garage could not believe it!

Sorry for the late reply, but I visit whenever I can. I believe they are the same. My repair order (RO) referenced code C1000. Cross-check with whatever code your diagnosis spits out.

I never had battery and CEL. You may have a new reason for these lights or the CEL & battery lights are not directly related to the other issues.

My advice is to allow them to replace the control unit if they conclude that's the problem. It may not be cheap, but at least you'll have some warranty and comfort. Personally I don't like dealing with ML electrical issues - too much that can go wrong. Lat time I tried, I fried my A/C blower motor.

Hi all,

New to this forum and new to the W163 world. I am from Greece (far away e?) and I own a 2000 ML320 with 50,000 miles on. I had my car serviced in an authorized MB dealer (as always do) and after couple of weeks the ABS,ETS,EBS warning leds came on, and then off, and on... and so on.. The car is driveable however low range and cruise control will not work as long as these warnings are on. I have scheduled an appointment to the dealers but after reading all these I will think about it again.. So here comes the request that will also serve other newcomers with similar problems..
a) Can someone summarize the likely causes of this problem (including fuses codes, etc)
b) Can we have a picture of the fuse box and where is located?

Thank you very much for any help.

Mine came on and stayed on after replacing the brake light switch, turns out it was the ABS Modulator pump,....Cost on pump $1600 but for $400 less from here: http://www.trademotion.com/memberser...&siteid=213951 Part no. (0044310412)-$1200.00

Seems like MB should have a recall on these pumps/problems as so many of us owners have reported the same issue...

I also had the three little lights problem. Eventually it was traced to a faulty ABS sensor on a rear wheel.

I would think after hearing how many things can cause these lights to come on that you WOULD want to bring it to the dealer since they know the vehicle's computer systems and have information on how to properly test the systems. Sure, the first thing to check is your fuses and relays, but that's rarely the real problem. The dealer can pinpoint it and tell you exactly what is wrong. Yes, sometimes it will be expensive, but not taking it to the dealer wont make what's wrong with it different....and throwing darts (putting on parts on a hunch or guess) can be costly too. Just my opinion.

BAS lights!!!

Had a mates car to look at the other day, this was a 2003 car with the integrated ABS/ESP module with no separate relay, he had bought it at an auction cheap, reason was the abs and bas lights started flashing after about 3 minutes of running or just leaving the key on, having the luxury of STAR it came up with no CAN comms to ABS module, we swapped the unit onto from my ML and it worked perfect on that car, the car had been around other garages as all of the CAN wiring had been cut into around the car.
After much diagnosis ,and looking on MBcircuit diagrams of the CAN network the fault was the trip computer above the mirror going down and pulling the CAN bus down so comms on the ABS ecu were first to go.Left the computer disconnected and everything now ok,lengthy diagnosis but a cheap fix, so try disconnecting that first!

Guys, could anyone share the P/N for that bloody K25 relay? I'm having the exact same issues as the OP, heat related ABS/ESP problems. Basically, except for summer, the systems work fine. As soon as the heat comes, the lights pop up.

Where exactly is that K25? I definitely need to have a look at it. Fingers x'ed it will solve my problem as well.

Cheers,
Gab

Well, I think this is quite similar, I have had the same issues for the past 2 years, every summer (quite hot summer here) my ESP light goes on and stays on. As soon as the heat goes away, in autumn, the error goes off and stays off until next summer. Also, if I turn the climate control on and cool down the cabin, I've noticed the error takes longer to pop up. So pretty similar with what the OP was experiencing with his car. My car is a 2001 model, so I'm thinking there might be some similarities between the cars, maybe I'll eventually fix this annoying issue.

K25 relay on an Ml could be completely different from yours.
Why don't you try scanning the car for codes. Its good to read threads & have an idea, but each case is different. Getting the car scanned with a pro level scanner must be your first step to diagnosing your problem. Anytime you have the ESP light on means you will have stored codes in the ESP module & corresponding codes in others. Knowing these codes will be the answer to the issue, instead of guess work.

You, sir, are very much correct. However, considering the relay is pretty cheap and that the car is 14 year old now, I was thinking that I might just go ahead and replace it. Also, if the OP's car is roughly the same year of production, I'm thinking that the ESP system itself should be pretty similar. So I should have the same relay. Maybe. Could anyone at least share the part number for that relay, please?

K25 Relay on the ML is A002 542 15 19. Hella# is 4rb 007 967-00.
I don't think it will be of any use to you.... Relays are different even on different year & model ML's........
Why don't you open your fuse box & check the chart. What exactly K25 relay is in your car...Do you even have a K25 relay? Check on the chart ABS relay. After locating it, the part# will be on top of it.
The ESP systems are very different on a CLK & ML's.

The K25 relay is not your problem. The problem is probably with the ebox fan that cools the ESP/Traction Control Module.

Go to your own forum and find its location and see if it has a small fan inside the box.

Since getting it back, the BAS/ETS/ABS lights keep coming on (they never used to come on before – the brake switch has once been replaced a couple of years back to resolve a similar symptom).

This is what happens. In the morning at cold start they usually don’t come on for the 12 mile drive to work, but in the afternoon at lunch hour, start the truck and the lights will come on in less than 2 minutes of driving.

They will come on, on every start up for the rest of the day and the on the next day the same cycle repeats.

I already inspected the ABS relay in the fuse box, made sure the brake light bulbs are not blown, replaced the brake switch yesterday, as these are common causes of this problem. Everything seems fine. The brake lights even come on every time the brake paddle is depressed, but the mysterious lights don’t want to go off after lunch hour.

It almost seems like the afternoon temperature has something to do with the lights coming on. Only other anomaly I noticed is that as part of the B service, the brake fluid has been topped off a bit too much (way above the max. indicator)..is there something as topping off the fluid too much? Would that cause it?
i have the same problem too, but the weirdest thing now is that i've been watchin and waitin for it just to b really sure 😅
anyway, as long as im driving alone, everything seems to b ok, but when ever i pick some one, to b precise, when ever tow persons come along, and after they get in and after i drive for lets say less than a min, the bas esp brake light turns on and starts to beeb constantly !!! Has it ever happened witb any of u ?!?!?

Have you done a search on the w163 forum(s), google, regarding 'bas esp light' problem?
Plenty of discussions and solutions on this.
