2013 ML350 BlueTec
1 yr later and 12 visits to the dealer

Its been exactly 1 year since I've taken possession of my CPO 2013 ML350 Bluetec w/ 39k.

Friends ask me how my year was and what I've been doing? Spending time at the MB Dealership.

Here is a quick summary:
Day 1 39k miles, on way home, noticed a LED out on running board,
- Engine light leading to limp mode

Day 7-39k miles,
- Dealer said everything was fixed...limp mode again on the actual drive home again, made U turn.

April 16- 43k miles
- Washing fluid sensor failed, 2wks after that, same sensor failed again.
- Trunk door latch doesnt always open correctly.
- Velco on moonroof peeling off

May'16, changed dealership service center. Original guys were just really bad.

Aug 16 47k miles -
-Moonroof bug screen became detached.
-Replaced rear brake exterior light bulb

Sep16 48k miles-
- NOx Sensor fault, both sensors replaced

Nov '16 - 49k miles-
-Famous adblue heater failure
-Rear wiper arm mounting point split.

Dec'16, 51k miles -
- While changing oil, noticed oil in cover...famous turbo gasket, or oil cooler gasket leak. At dealership since Fri.
- Also, moonroof opens very slow, and stuck on closing. Track needs grease, wanted to charge me 1hour of labor, not under warranty. I refused to pay, will contact Headquarters, they will cover as courtesy.
- Smell of feet when heat is on recirculation. 1hr fee to flush, not under warranty. I refuse.

Look on the bright side:

- MB always had a loaner and sometimes they loose the reservation and give me a C class instead. While it was fun to drive, one of my three children did not sit in a car seat because it wouldnt fit. So, she was squished in the middle.

- I get a free car wash about once a month after a service appointment.

- Coffee machine at the dealership makes a good latte.

- Hope not to see the more expensive repairs such as OIL COOLER GASKET, DEF HEATER, NOx sensor for another 50k miles.

It looks like I suffered from all the issues that were supposed to have been fixed by MB. So, whats next on the list so I can look for it. Still have extended warranty until Nov '17.

Is this common? Is this a lemon?

Oh, had the oil tested..very high levels of Iron. Will get it retested after 3k miles. I'm hoping the original CPO dealership didnt change the oil and it was just really dirty.

Any thoughts?

It looks like you have a verity of different problems, not a lemon. Knowing the history of the car and the high iron content in the oil, I would trade in it as soon as possible.

Sorry my ignorance, I tried to google it but getting results related to blood iron, which is very bad same as for a car as I can tell.

Why, when do you test oil for iron?
What are the symptoms?

No symptoms related to the high iron content. The oil was dark and dirty when I checked after taking possession. Researched it and found that oil color has very little to do with its ability to protect the engine,..especially in diesel engines. After experiencing how the dealership handled the same repair issues over and over again, I was very disappointed and had doubts about their 120 point CPO inspection. For $28, thought its worth just getting a blood test.
I will re-test in another 2k miles and see changes in the iron content. I know the old oil had at least 10k miles on it if not more. My assumption is the oil analysis takes into consideration the age of the oil and I submitted a much older sample. I hope the iron is from "break-in" of a diesel engine, or just poor maintenance from the previous owner. I need to just flush the old oil out to avoid additional friction inside the engine.
All other impurities in the oil appear to be somewhat normal. If the next few samples indicate high iron, something is rubbing.

Sorry to hear. I've had the opposite experience. Got our 2012 ML350 4matic (gas) model 2 years ago. Only thing that broke was a tail light bulb which I replaced myself. One service each year at dealer and that's it. They gave me an ML for the loaner.

If if I had all those issues pop up, I'd honestly consider trading it.

I wouldn't worry about the iron content until you run a new sample. I have attached a recent sample from my ML Bluetec. First column is the recent run and the second column shows the previous run. You can see the levels come down and read the commentary.

Sorry you're having problems with the ML. Ironically I bought mine that had bought back and I haven't had an issue with it. I had an ML550 I bought new I never could sort.

At any rate, hope this analysis helps you compare to the numbers you're seeing.

Boulder,

Thanks for posting your results. I tried to upload, but ran into technical upload problems. Our results are very close. My iron level is double your first test, but everything else is about the same if not a tiny bit lower. I hope the next time around is less...got to wait and see. How many miles on your car, why did they reference it as "wear-in" stuff?

Based on their comments, it does sound like the level of impurities found is relative to the age of the sample. Because I dont know for sure the real age of the first sample, I hope it was understated.

I will post the results after I submit a 2nd analysis.

I would not run 10K OCI with the current recommendation spec of oil. It is cheap, quick and easy to change oil and filter with OM642s using a suction pump taking me 15-20 min max.

Read this and food for thought.

What suction pump do you recommend? Where do you take old oil for disposal?

Just checking out a cheap 12v oil extractor from Amazon. Nothing more than sticking a clear tube down the dip stick slot and start sucking into an empty container. Oil disposal can probably be done at a local garage.

What I get from the previous post is the importance of keeping the system clean with fresh oil (5k miles) and clean air filters. Not about to start using non-MB compliant oil. Not the first time I've heard to drive diesel hard to keep DPF clean. Also read somewhere else to remove the belly panel to keep things cooler. And, magnetic drain plug.

I use this.

Mityvac 7201 Fluid Evacuator Plus https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007QV0966..._mf.Eyb3RWCRPP

You can take old oil to local town dump. Also there are people who uses old oil to fuel their furnaces.

Here is the tool to remove the oil filter.
Assenmacher Specialty Tools M 0284 Oil Filter Socket Wrench (84mm, 14Flats) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QHQW8I..._Mn.Eyb2A8RJST
