Views on Different Black Colors
I can not decide over what black shade I want as exterior color. Confused between all the blacks.
By far I know that the stock black is the blackest black but it is a gloss color and gloss colors lose their charm after 3 years or so but I want a metallic black. Also, Magnetite Black is like a very dark grey and can't really be called a black.
I require help. Ruby Black/Obsidian Black/Black? Does ruby black carry a sort of red pearl effect and obsidian carry a gold dust effect?

There's only 2 blacks
040 black - this is the wet look one, harder to maintain
obsidian black - standard metallic black, easier to maintain as flake can mask some scratches/swirls
rest like mocha, ruby, etc are really just very very very dark colors but can see the color in daylight ie mocha is dark brown, ruby is dark maroon

If you like the "true" black you should stay with either black or obsidian black. My '14 S Class was Obsidian Black while my '16 is a Ruby Black. The Ruby Black is black at night and on a cloudy day. But on a sunny day or at night with direct light showing on the paint it is a dark maroon color. IMHO it is an awesome color.

You guys forget magnetite black. After having had several obsidian and gloss black MB's, this is the color I like the best.
To me, the gloss black is impossible to look clean longer than 5 min. and the surface was very delicate.
The obsidian looks great close up but always seems to look dusty at a distance. More carefree than the gloss black.
The magnetite has had a steel Grey/black/blue? Looks great close-up and from a distance.

I have Magnetite Black Metallic.
In daylight, it it more like a very dark grey metallic color. Under shadow or in dark, it is black metallic color. As in the two pictures below, the car can appear differently under different lightings.
Originally I was looking for a grey color, so the Magnetite Black Metallic fit me well. And yes, it is rather forgiving to dirt, and is easier to keep clean than pure black color.

Obsidian black, magnetite black, ruby black, mocha black, black opal, etc. are two/multi tone colors that change colors depending on e light conditions.
Selenite and Palladium are tones of gray.
If you want black, get the 040.

I loved my 040 Black 2013 W221, within a couple of hours of it having been washed. The rest of the time, as far as I was concerned, it was dirty. One day, a seagull dropped a huge bomb on the hood. I pulled over, got a wet paper towel and VERY gently cleaned it off. It left a scratched area which, luckily, the detail guy was able to polish out, but still. Every now and then, my Palladium S550 or my wife's Iridium E350 will get hit by a bird or just get dirty between washes. I simply hit the panel with some Meguiars detailing spray, wipe it off and it looks great. I'm quite sure that the same scratches are being produced, but on these silvers, they are invisible. Since we lease these cars, I couldn't care less. Black cars are beautiful, but IMO they are just too much trouble to keep them looking great.

Love my Ruby Black. Great pictures above. I have Porcelain/ Black interior which looks beautiful. A lot of people think its black but then in the sun notice the burgundy. My partner describes the color as Black Cherry.
Good luck with all the choices! Great car and you can't go wrong.

I also have the magnetite black. The previous member mentioned that it looks different depending on how the light hits it. I could not agree more.
This car looks black at night, and at dusk. In bright light, it looks like slate grey (which I feel is a very dark grey). There are times, if the light hits it right, that it has a hint of blue color in it.
I think these perceived "color changes" are due to the metallic nature of this paint. It is a nice color. I really like it. Mine is black inside..great color combo in my opinion.
Good luck.

My favorite color combo. If I were to buy one this is what I would get
Of course it is no coincidence that my love of this combo stems from that fact that my Dads '59 180 was the same color combo. I think that it is just beautiful

+1 for Ruby Black. I just got my S63 and was concerned buying it sight unseen. It is a very interesting color. At night it seems black, different times of day it shows purple/cherry hues. Underrated color and looks very expensive, especially with black AMG wheels and red brake calipers.
