Cannonball Run

Do you recall that movie? well it was the talk at work today , this goes on for real and has been going on for decades. It starts from New York and ends in La. The previous record holder was Richard Rawlings from that discovey show "Gas Monkey" his time was around 31hrs i think , it was done in a ferrari maranello. So anyway we have a new title holder of this feat he did this in 28hrs and change , and he used a mercedes. Im new to the benz world so i cant tell what model it is? you guys may even know about this? this new record holder Ed goes on and says he would hit top speeds of 150mph i bet his car was stock? well except for the 2 extra fuel cells in the trunk. so who can tell us what model this benz is? also do you think its stock? besides all the electrical crap in there to avoid police. I just think its cool a benz holds this record. Hell killed Richards time by 3hrs

The car is a CL. Probably a CL55 AMG.

2004 cl55 amg. They chose it because he needed active suspension for the weight distribution of the two extra gas tanks. It's a really good story. There's a full write up about it online.

I heard them say at one point, top speed was 158? I thought 55's were limited to 155?

Mercedes
many speedometers , they aren't exact

So while the car may have a restriction at 155, the actual speed may have been 158 if the speedo read slower than actual speed , such as a GPS would measure

Guy spent over 10000 on Manitence . It had over 100k miles when he bought it. With the fresh tires the speedo was prob off 2-5 miles. Whenever I add larger tires or wheels to my car it alters the speedo slightly. The car was professionally GPS tracked the whole time to confirm. Plus, hitting 155 in these cars is swift. The inertia of acceleration prob also gave him a extra mile or 2 for a moment

Ahh, I suppose that small discrepancy would make the difference.

If i was able to choose any car i wanted to attempt this cannonball run , im still not convinced my first pick would be a mercedes? i dunno?

lets see you still want to kind of blend in with the surrounding traffic, so it would not be wise to pick a $250k exotic , need to carry a few extra few cells , I would not want a stiff suspension kicking my *** all those miles. on 2nd thought maybe a nice mercedes would do just fine.
