I went to my Mercedes dealer and had the COMAND system updated. I have a 2007 S550. The initial complaint was about the navigation screen swiveling on its own. That problem hasnt re-occured yet, but where are the 3D maps and real time traffic? I cant seem to find them. I was hoping that the update would add these features, but it didn't. Did the dealer not update it? Am I doing something wrong?

I think real time traffic is automatic, but certain days depending if the (radio signal for the traffic ) for the report is updated from the traffic report it may not show up.

Real Time Traffic requires an active Sirius subscription.

If you dont have birds-eye view or real-time traffic, very possible to say that the dealer did not do the update. I had traffic+birds-eye after I had my done and I dont have sat-radio.

On the top of your COMAND, do you see "Navi Audio Telephone Vehicle" or "Navi Audio Telephone Video Vehicle" ?

If you don't have the latter, the update wasn't done.

I have "Navi Audio Telephone Vehicle". So how would I go about arguing with the service tech. I'm sure he's gonna fight with me and argue that the update was done.

This statement is incorrect. Only model year 2010 vehicles use Sirius for traffic information. 2007 through 2009 receive their traffic information via FM radio. The traffic information is provided under a lifetime agreement MBUSA negotiated with Navteq for model year 2008 vehicles. Upgraded 2007 vehicles appear as 2008 vehicles and automatically receive the data. There is no action you need to take to get the data once the upgrades are in place. There is no way to turn traffic data on/off. It is always on.

Most, if not all, 2007 model year S and CL vehicles should work with the upgrade. I have a 2007 CL manufactured in September 2006 and the upgrade worked for it.

There are only a limited number of dealers that will install the upgrade. Many claim it can't be done. In order to receive traffic information, you first need the upgrade. Then you need to install a version of the navigation DVD newer than the original one that was delivered with your vehicle. I suggest either version 7 or version 8.

navigation upgrades aside, i dont see anything else new. i was told that the new update enabled navigating through presets rather than frequencies. but this is not the case. do i need the maps upgrade for this to be updates as well?

I've seen a technical bulletin about the screen turning on its own. Perhaps the shop updated the screen SW, not the Comand unit (I could try to find the bulletin to figure out if Comand SW is involved).

All 2007 W221 cars can have the telematics update and the scan by presets comes with the update. I've posted the amendment for the user manual that the shop should print for the owner, not sure if it is still available.

But some shops have real problems version coding the car properly after the update and then some refuse to acknowledge the presence of this update option completely.

If you don't have the video option in COMAND, you didn't get the update we are talking about. The traffic option will be there with the update, but you will not get traffic info without updating the map software as well. They will not do the map software without charging you (most likely) because it is not necessary to fix the problems the update is designed to correct.

Take it back complaining it is still doing the same thing (even if it doesn't) and take a copy of the bulletin # with you. You can find it in a hundred posts on this forum.

I've had issues with the dealers here if I don't take specific bulletins with me. They seem clueless when it comes to coding.

Pretty sure it's FM-based, I don't have Sirius and get the traffic updates on my upgraded '07 Comand. Or maybe I have Sirius and don't realize it? :-)

Two things here - what version did he update the Nav to? Ask for version 7.0. Also, to get the Video option - have him do the Telematics update, which is separate from the Nav.

Looks like I was wrong; it's indeed based on free FM prior to MY2010. I feel ripped off ;-)

so I went back to the dealer and spoke to the manager. he claims that they updated the system and that my swiveling screen problem shouldn't turn up again. when I questioned him regarding the lack of a video option, he told me that i needed another upgrade to get those features and that it was going to be expensive. any ideas fellas?

I had the same problem you did. I remember even having the DTB copy in hand and being told by the SA (looking straight into my eyes) such update DOES NOT EXIST and not to believe the false info. Hey at least they were willing to do it for you for a fee...

I had the satellite radio upgrade and it included all of the Command System updates. I paid $125.00 for the upgrade.

Question, if I purchase a navigation disc from a friend of mine and try to install it in my car, would I need the update first? Or does the disc contain all the updates as well?

No the Nav Disc only contain updates for the maps, your Command has to be updated first in order to get all the features.

Once while on the freeway, my car decided to open the passenger door all on it's own, so when I took it in for that, they performed the telematics update, but not the maps. The telematics update was free.
