Navigation Update
Hello all. This is my first post here. I am looking for assistance because I have a MY 2011 S550 and I purchased a new navigation disk from the Mercedes dealership. The disk comes with a password unique to my VIN. The password is not working and the dealership can't get to it until next Wednesday. Has anyone ever experienced this issue? If so, how did you all get the unit to recognize the password? Thanks for your assistance.

Copy protection - can only be used on 1 vehicle with an activation code and is not transferable.

I have seen many threads regarding people sharing disks so I don't know if this is something, new but the Mercedes Benz dealer told me that a new measure has been put in place to prevent copyright violations and whenever a new navigation disk set is ordered, the set is ordered against the VIN for that vehicle which is tied to the Comand system that was installed when the vehicle was delivered from the factory.
The dealer is saying that because of the copyright protection and the VIN being tied to the Comand system, if the Comand system was replaced in the vehicle due to malfunction, the password that is issued with the product will not work because the password is linked to the original equipment installed from the factory. This will require the dealer to contact MBUSA and give them all the technical specs from the new Comand system.
Nevertheless, I called MBUSA because I did not want to wait until next Wednesday and they told me that if I gave them the part number from my receipt, they could get the password reset for my VIN. They called this morning and gave me a new password. I will see if it works when I get home later tonight.

Just got the navi update for my 2012 S350 and ran into same issue. You stick the update disk in and it asks for the key. The first "PIN" they generated for me (and printed out) did not work. They said the General Manager had to go into some system and generate another PIN. The next PIN worked and the system updated. They told me the same thing...the PIN is generated using a number from both the indivdual disks and your VIN. Once used the PIN (and those disks) are only valid for that vehicle and will not work with others. I'm sure someone will figure a way around this eventually but for now this is what the dealers are saying.

Thanks for sharing! Good info to know.
Can you let us know what's different with this update? Is it just a map update? I've always used my iPhone 5s + Tune2Air combo for navigation, so I have yet to truly explore the S-Class navigation functionality.

I spoke to the first customer service representative that answered the phone when i called MBUSA. At first they wanted me to wait until my dealer sorted it out because they said the dealer is responsible but I told them that I live 1 hour away from the dealer and it's bad business that I was given the incorrect code to begin with and I didnt trust the dealer to get it right. I also told them that the dealer said it would take 48 more hours and I wasn't going to wait that long after spending money purchasing the update. After that, I was placed on hold and the representative told me that he spoke to a manager and they are going to allow him to generate a new code. I was good to go with the code I was provided. Update downloaded with no issues.

I agree. I don't understand why Mercedes stays with a Vendor that is continually 1 to 2 years behind the competition. Surely with the price of the vehicles it is not a cost issue.

That looks like a cell phone jammed into an ugly old dash. You can do the same thing with your cell phone too and have whatever kind of Nav software you want from the Google or I-phone market and put it up on your dash or in front of your Nav screen to have the same effect.

Mercedes NAV updates are a waste of money. Mr. Bobby is correct in that the vendor they use is way behind. I've noted a Marriott hotel that has been in business for over 10 years is still not listed in my 2014 NAV update, among other POI's not listed like Costco's and other gas stations. MB NAV updates relies on www.Here.Com for the POI information and it's such a joke. Here.com's map info is based on info submitted by a worldwide user community for updates, which I have to question their accuracy. My home is shown on the wrong block in COMAND!!! Google Maps isn't perfect, but it's got the most up to date POI information and it will usually have the most updated routes.
