Bad gas odor driver side passenger door
I'm sorry I know asked about this but cant find. Real bad gas smell from outside driver side passenger door. Not inside the car. Someone posted something about a recall for 2004 e320 sedans but can find that to. Looked at recalls for my model but haven't seen anything on this. Any ideas? Its a gas engine.

It's your fuel pump.
Pull up the back seat lower cushion, remove the plate under it, and you will see the top of the tank. It will be full of fuel.
There was a warranty extension on them, check with your local dealer to see if your car is still covered. I think it had cutoff age but i'm not sure. If it's covered you will get a new pump/filter unit or complete tank, depending on the particular car.

It's quite easy, you could definitely do it yourself if you're somewhat mechanical or have a friend who is. Inspect it and see if it's just one side or both, price out the appropriate unit and gasket, it won't be that bad. All you really need to do is disconnect whatever plugs/lines are attached to it, unscrew the large nut that holds it down (many ways to do this, search youtube for fuel pump removal and choose whatever makes you comfortable), pull up and remove the pump (best when the car is low on fuel). There will be some other lines on it inside the tank, un-plug them and install the new one in reverse order. Before you close the seat up, start the car and make sure there are no leaks. Should take you under an hour if you take your time.

Hey Jo, your car is covered until 2018/19, depending on it was first sold. This issues has a 15-year extended warranty. Just take car to dealer and tell them you're smelling gas. I had mine done last year, and they even gave me a loaner. Don't try to fix this on your own!
