1992 Honda Prelude
SL500: Worth it?

Hello MBWorld.

I'm a snot nosed 18 year old who goes to school & works who lives in N.Y. I've had my first car for about a year now (1992 Honda Prelude Si) and I've dumped money into it and there's still problems with it. I mean it gets me to where I have to go, but I want something more. Plus "life's too short to drive boring cars"

I grew up around cars all of my life. And I've recently been searching for a new car. I don't want another 4 Cyl Japanese FWD Sports car. The Prelude fit me when I was in High School. I'm now a Business Major & a Manager of a retail store, I think I owe it to myself.

Enter the SL. I've been looking at E30's & SL's. The E30 is nice and all, but the SL is not just refined, luxury performance, but from the research I've done it's extremely reliable & can be used as a daily driver. I don't care about premium gas (I put Premium in my Prelude ever since I've owned it), but what I do care about is insurance, & also want first hand opinions on whether or not I should go for it. Kinda bias of me asking a MB forum but hell, I figure who knows this stuff best?

Help me out guys. I found a SL500 with 90k for 6k around where I live & I'm considering it.

What year is the SL500 that you're considering?

depends on the year is true. i wouldnt get a 93-95ish because of potential wiring harness issues. i wouldnt get a m113 version either because of 3 valves per cylinder vs 4 and Mercedes after the Chrysler merger were problematic. and i like obd1 cars for tunability and still passing smog (in california)... the 90 and 91 had a different steering wheel then my 1992s and i prefer the 92 steering wheel over the 90/1 steering wheel. i also like the prefacelifted wedged boxyness r129 to the latter sleeker lines. so my 2 cents would be get a 1992 500SL...

About insurance when i first got mine i had a reckless driving on my record which added a lot to cost. ive put over $60,000 into one of them (i have 2) i don't regret it and love my car. Cost of maintenance shouldn't scare you. and really it's not that expensive. (i get wholesale parts from the dealer) plus i get labor at the dealer occasionally, sometimes use the indy, sometime do it myself, and sometime i use it for the students at my local college to practice on.

neither of my cars ran when i got them. but it is a dream come true. if you want a daily get a DEALER inspection for proabaly $160. if you are concerned about broken stuff. but ask yourself really? its around a 20 year old car stuff is going to go wrong whether its the best or worst example in your area. maybe one will be more or less costly.

i know they always say a cheap mercedes is a expensive mercedes but id look around more you can buy one for less and use the money that you save towards the repairs. because both cars will need repair.

any other questions just ask

carbon fiber body panels (front and rear bumper fenders and side skirts custom made by a friend and business partner in Thailand) they are available for order if you want a set too. i have rear multi link heim joints. i made 3 exhaust setups one i trashed because it was garbage. one is with 2 magnaflow direct fit cats stock resonator and muffler for smogging (all custom made to pass smog) pipe size was increased to American Standard instead of metric system measurements. oh and both of these systems are flanged for swapping. the other is 3" dual with x pipe and 40 series flowmasters loud as hell. no cats no resonators. custom downpipes with flanges. tinting (ceramic not regular)... lots and lots of maintenance at indies and the dealer. i mainly get dealer wholesale part. all aluminum radiator instead of the plastic aluminum combo. new cooling system except fan clutch. new alternator and battery. the car had an issue when i bought it some one ground down the pulley put on the wrong alternator and a bunch of other stuff so that was 1650 alone to diagnose and fix. (i got a 20% discount on parts and another 20% discount on parts on top of that and only was charged 1 hour labor... they had the car over a month and had at least 30 hours labor into it. i got amg spec 18in wheels and tires rotary forged 18lbs each (not including tires) H&R springs with #1 and #3 shims... new strut mounts, bump stops, waiting til after this race on the 19th to order the b6 bilsteins and replace brake fluid that ive already purchased... i spent 3050 on a port and polish and engine from a member on benzworld and was screwed out of my money and banned over it. luckily the bank and paypal helped me get most of my money back except for 550. i have tons and tons of receipts and i know im forgetting many things... however labor and parts are relatively expensive so 60k isnt much. as i said on benzworld i plan on spending at least 250k. to hang with the big boys at events like the texas mile and (the event im running in airstrip attack) i need a lot of money into it. the top car in this coming race is a 1600hp lambo... 332hp isnt going to cut it.

hundreds if not thousands of pictures yes.

or i could take more...

and after may 3rd~ i will be giving john aka lowesguy a ton of stuff mainly interior bits from my white SL for free to sell to you guys so if you need anything let him know after that point. a lot of stuff i broke out or cut out with an exacto knife but there is plenty of good stuff available. i will not distribute it myself because i have other things to do. after i take apart my black SL i will have more stuff available as well.

after i install my body kit i will have the body panels available as well. and i will be devoloping the rest of the car in carbon fiber with my fabricator in Thailand as well... doors trunk a pillar hood door cards dash everything that can be taken off and molded... oh and i plan to make a hard top in carbon fiber as well...
