Hang on....

Being in and around the industry for nearly 40 years, I can tell you that the cars you see at these auctions are NOT the kind of cars that folks on these boards desire. Until you see them, you just cannot imagine how scary most of these cars are. And if it's the caliber car that we enthusiasts desire, then those auction prices are not relevant.
Just saying, be careful, the majority of the time, you get what you pay for.

I agree with you to some degree, but the "below, average, above" indicates the overall condition and options on the car. this can give one a general sense of where they're trading with enough data points. it also let's a potential buyer know how much markup a retail lot has on a specific car.

Mmmm, no.

This is Manheim data. Even though they offer a CR (condition report) at auction, all cars don't reach the block or have CR's. If you've ever seen the way that cars look when they come in from auction, you know that 1) above average means only two or three panels painted and two mismatched tires, 2) average means hit only on one side, and 3) below means hit by a bus or an airplane. As far as margins, remember that these figures do not include: auction fees, transport, any other repairs (if they make them), and reconditioning (if they do it). Even if these things are dealt with, you still have only an average car at best.
Only trying to say, if you want a special car, you aint gonna find it there. No free lunch.

. . . "above average means only two or three panels painted and two mismatched tires" . . .

so you're saying every car that has ever sold at a manhiem auction has been painted? I was completely unaware of this

That was always my gut feeling about auction cars.....LOL! Thanks for clarifying those condition ratings.

It's pretty clear that an E55 at an auction is there for a reason. Either the condition is poor, it doesn't have a good service history, or it's just so badly worn out that the costs to bring it back are simply too high.....

The Manheim data seems like a useful way to figure out a "worst case value" for the E55, but I'd certainly laugh at anyone trying to use this data to establish values of a "real" E55.

Sorry for the obvious satire...

And everyone doesn't want or need a special (read: above or far above average) car. It doesn't mean that much to some folks. I just figure that it does to the guys on this board. Most people just have a real inaccurate idea of what these auctions are like. Hey, every once in a while you can find a gold nugget in a pile of sand. Just not very often...

Thanks for the info!

As others have mentioned, it's difficult to determine the true value of the car due to not seeing the car in person and that auction cars may be at an auction for a reason.

But it's good data nonetheless. Thanks for sharing!

OP- Can you get a list of E63's for 07-09 please. That might be nice to see also in comparison.

1. ALL Auction cars are not bad cars to get. Typically if a Mazda dealer gets a 07 E63 in no matter what mileage they will send it to a auction. That goes for any dealer that doesn't want to deal with older model cars, higher mileage cars etc..... A lot of dealers finances won't go back 6 years on a car to finance either. Now specialty lenders which are plenty will. But that doesn't mean the cars themselves are bad.

2. I have been around MANY high end auction cars. Issues I have seen are what have been mentioned. Panels that have been painted. Bumpers which have been re-sprayed on a corner but not matched to color. Brakes and rotors need replacing. Of the ones I have seen and its been hundreds at a certain dealer, they typically correct these issues.

3. Common issue is lights on dashes start popping up unexpectantley. Might be an easy fix, but might be expensive.

4. I wouldn't run from one, MINE IS A AUCTION CAR, but carfax had a decent history, most don't, but that doesn't mean much. Only if the or a dealer inputted it into the system. No lights on mine, no paint except where I re-sprayed the bumpers and rockers to make it perfect.

I never trust any work done on a car unless its documented or I have had it done. I will take a car and go through each step of Flushing and replacing till I know its safe again. My last step on mine is differential flush which is Thursday.

5. ANY car you buy falls into this category. Just cause you bought at a MB dealer doesn't mean its a perfect good car. But...... a auction car you really don't know condition till you truly see it in person. That is difficult to swallow. I worked a deal with my dealer that if I didnt like it I won't buy it. They paid an extra 1k at the auction that if it wasn't in the condition listed, they can return it themselves. They do this on every car they get, just in case.

In the end, just be careful, not every good deal is a good deal. If you want a good one, and your on here, find one from a member or if selling one, use these lists for a guide to what you will get from yours. These prices are fair but maybe not for a exceptional car like most of ours. Ours really should typically garner more money, but they need to be advertised correctly to get that. Educate your buyers in the ads.

Just some thoughts

Yeah those are some good points. Two of my cars were sold at auction at one point in their life.

My SA is out of the office until next week. I'm not sure he's going to want to run another search though, he kinda did it as a favor to me since I've serviced my Mercedes with him. Maybe someone else on the forum has account access?
