Thinking of buying a 2014 E63 AMG S Sedan. Please help.
Hi All,
I am thinking of buying a 2014-15 E63 AMG S sedan/wagon. Our story...
We have been looking to buy a family performance sedan and had initially placed an order for an Audi S7. Unfortunately, the VW diesel scandal broke and I own a 2010 Jetta TDI Wagon that is involved in the scandal. I am pissed at VW for their egregious unethical illegal behavior and have decided NOT to reward the VAG group with a sale as I have totally lost trust in their brand.
We looked at our options and the E63 AMG looked like it will fit our needs. I test drove a E63 AMG S and really like everything about the car. Awesome power, an aural treat, really luxurious and comfortable. I am still undecided if I want the wagon or the sedan. Both will work for us. We really enjoyed 10 years with a BMW 540 wagon. The AMG wagon is the only available uber-wagon today. AWD is a requirement for us living the PNW and frequently using the family car for trips in the winter.
I checked out some used 2014 AMG S sedans on Autotrader and found values all over the map. Here is one of them :
2014 E63 AMG S
6500miles
Diamond White / Black Nappa
Night Styling
Parking Assist
Driver Assist
Listed at $89.9K.
What would be a good purchase price for this car? Do a PPI?
Based on my research, this car should be valued somewhere around $78K dealer retail. Am I totally off with the pricing? Do AMGs sell for more than what NADA, KBB, etc values?
Totally confused and lost. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Jay

pricing is obviously market driven. Guides are just that, guides.
Firstly decide exactly what you want, it sounds as though you are leaning toward a wagon again after your 540. Look at options available, list the must-haves, and would-like-to-have items.
See what's out there to get your ball park figure.
PPI is almost essential.
An advertised price of $89.9K would probably be haggled down to low 80s depending on your skill and determination of seller.
Don't stress. It's just a car.

I agree with LFC. And you are correct that the pricing varies quite a bit.
For me, in a similar position as you, have been looking - for a wagon specifically. I think you can realistically get one between 75-85k depending on mileage, options, CPO, vehicle history and obvious market demands. They have been dropping over the past few months though. Since they will be announcing the new '17 E class soon, I suspect the current pricing will drop more (my hopes). Good luck with your search...

Edit..
The reply didn't come across right. TDI was our dog wagon and the RAnge Rover Sport will delegated to that duty. Decided not to get anything from VAG due to the diesel gate cluster....

the wagon is cool but the rear seats in the sedan have a pass through and can even be completely folded down so there's a good potential for storage space in either option. both also have AWD but the sedan is a bit lighter and more aerodynamic so you'd get all the benefits of that. i like the look of the sedan better but either one is great. probably the most car for your money that one can buy.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
I looked at one at Burlington MA Audi, not sure if they still have it, but it was not a bad price. They wanted 98K and it was a 2015 with 464 miles on it, the story was the woman who's husband bought her the car really wanted a Porsche and they traded it in quick. It's steel gray with a design red interior. Burlington MA Mercedes has a new 2016 coming in that they will take around 102K for and it's that new silver color, can't remember the name, but the car should be in by now. There was a used one in Marrieta Ga that was that Matte Silver color and they were down to 83K on that, it's a wagon (all cars I listed are wagons) the car has 8K miles on it and it's a 2014. Might be able to get it around 80K. You're picking the right vehicle, these cars are great. I also have a 2015 VW Golf TDI Wagon and like you I'm a little bit pissed off at VW for doing what they did. At least on my car it should be a easy Fix, all the right emission equipment was there on the 2015/16 they just have the same screwball defeat programming as I think they thought it would raise a red flag if they changed around the programming, they knew the epa was after them for at least a year and a half. If you can wait and afford a 2017 you might be better off, they are upgrading the electronics and some other things and it will have even more horsepower, a nine speed automatic that will probably get rid of the jerky strange shift tendencies of the 7 speed auto and hopefully the throttle lag that has been talked about so much on the forums. I'm in a holding pattern right now myself waiting for the 2017 wagon which should be out by the end of next Summer or so, the sedans will be out early next. The car will first be displayed at the Detroit Auto Show in January, I did a thread about the 2017's a while back.

Not many success stories out there yet with the new 9sp transmissions
The throttle tip in lag is not going anywhere even with a new trans

98k is a joke and that dealership is a joke too. That why they sell Audi. Just sayin'

Actually, you are correct. The manager kind of reminded me of Tony Saprano The good news is when the car does not sell they will drop the price. It is kind of a strange color combination with the slate bluish color and the mystic red designo interior. They offered me 48 grand for my 2012, that kinda made me laugh out loud.

993, 2014 E63 Wagon
I ran some statistical analyses (yeah, I'm weird like that) on asking prices for dozens of E63 cars and based on that, I'm getting an asking price for this car of $77.4k. That's assuming an MSRP of $106k which should be close.
So yes, a $89.9k asking price is too high and would even look like an outlier in my data. The dealer seems to be pretending it's a one-year-old car.
