Leaf? Volt? Meet the B-Class, your new rival. Talks about Mercedes creating an electric car with Tesla have been floating through the ether for months now, but the truth is finally out. Tesla will be providing drive-trains and batteries to Mercedes for an all-electric B-Class by 2014.

It might not be the souped-up AMG A-class that we all want, but at least it’s coming to America.

The couple isn’t as strange a pairing as it might seem. Mercedes has 4.7 percent stake in Tesla and have already used their tech in Smart cars. For Mercedes, this is a great deal. The B-class is small enough to appeal to people looking to move up from entry-level cars to luxurious ones, but big enough to appeal to an american audience (it’s about the size of a Versa).

The allure of going gas free on thoroughly tested platform is an added bonus. Also, you can brag about it in front of all the Prius owners. Low cost of ownership and luxury? There’s no competition there. Well, at least not until Audi buckles down on their electric A3 e-tron. Or until BMW to release their new i-series.

Still, this car is a phantom. While we know when it’ll show up, we don’t really know anything else about it. Until then, lets just hope that it doesn’t flop when it shows up in the states. We need interesting cars now more than ever.
