Mercedes & The Weeknd Team Up for EQC Short Film on YouTube

By -

Trailer features awesome behind-the-wheel of Mercedes-Benz’s first-ever EQC electric SUV, full film debuts Nov. 29.

Once upon a time, the only luxury electric vehicle maker in the game was Tesla. Throughout the New ’10s, the mad genius of Elon Musk led to a decent lineup of EVs, from the mainstay that is the Model S, to the entry-level Model 3.

As the New ’20s approach, however, there are more players in the luxury EV game, each one putting their stamp on the foundation Tesla laid as the company began to slip into the pages of history. Mercedes-Benz is among the new class ready to take up where Musk will leave off, starting with the first entry of the EQ-Class, the EQC SUV.

And what better way to show off its first-ever mass-produced EV than with The Weeknd behind the wheel. Mercedes teamed up with the R&B star to create a short film for the EQC, and his adventures behind the wheel while driving through an unnamed city.

The trailer gives us just enough of an idea of what The Weeknd will be doing with the EQC, starting with a young skateboarder happening upon the singer-songwriter unplugging his ride from the charger.

The short film is then underscored by The Weeknd’s first solo single since 2018 (per Pitchfork), “Blinding Lights.” Lyrics site Genius adds that this song will not only debut in full with the short film on November 29 — Black Friday — but it’ll also drop on all music platforms the same day.

Meanwhile, the short film will also look back upon Mercedes-Benz’s history, featuring cars like the 300 SL “Gullwing” driving upon all sorts of roads from their times in the sun. As the company says in the trailer’s description, they’ve “written automotive history” since 1886, and are ready to write a new chapter to their story.

The synthwave R&B track is the perfect soundtrack to The Weeknd’s trip through the city in the EQC, and through the history of Mercedes over the past 130-plus years. And while Tesla is stuck in a sci-fi film of a mega-corp-dominated 1987 with its Cybertruck, the crew from Stuttgart are ready to live in the real, bright, electric future of the 2020s.
