Pristine 1971 Mercedes-Benz 350SL for Sale

This Mint, Old-School Mercedes-Benz 350SL Could Be Yours, And the Price May Just Be Right

Usually when you see an older Mercedes on the road, chances are that it’s pretty beaten down or in mint condition — the first instance being more common. We recently came across this pristine 1971 350SL on Bring a Trailer, and couldn’t believe our eyes. Just look at it.

Before we get down to the fine details of this beauty, let’s take a look at its history. The vehicle was purchased brand-new at Palmers Motors in Long Beach, CA. Years later in June 2014, it was purchased by the selling dealer from the original owner, and the odometer currently reads at 133,000 miles … not bad for a 46-year-old car. It’s since been kept as a personal vehicle, and hasn’t been put up for sale until now.

OEM Goodness

The 350SL is powered by a naturally aspirated V8 mated to a 3-speed automatic gearbox. The included maintenance records indicate that the car had been well-maintained over the years at Jim Slemons Imports in Newport Beach, CA. Thirty years ago, the original owner had the R107 professionally repainted its OEM Beige (181) color. Oh, and there’s a cherry on top: the factory hardtop is included! No signs of any damage are visible on the body according to the owner. The only minor concern is the small dark spots that have formed on the center of the soft top. The hardtop latches on and off without any problems, and the rear defroster works like a champ.

Clean on the Outside, Cream on the Inside

Moving onto the inside of the R107 , all the instruments are in proper working order, especially the original Becker Mexican radio. The two-tone leather interior seems to be in mint condition minus the side door pockets that appear to be peeling a bit.

The undercarriage is leak-free, and there aren’t any visible signs of damage. However, the exhaust system does have some rust on it.

The original MB Data Card, which verifies the beige paint, matching hardtop, and dark brown soft top are included with the sale. The original keys, booklets, spare tire and tool kit are included as well. Last but not least, a letter from the original owner will also be found with the car. The bid started at $5,000 on March 1, and it currently sits at $10,000 with six days left in the auction. If I had the extra cash and room for this beauty, I’d jump on it for sure.
