2004 E55 AMG Makes 663lb-ft of Torque with Simple Mods

By -

This 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG makes 540 horsepower and 663lb-ft of torque at the wheels with a relatively short mod list.

In stock form, the 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG is an impressive machine, with the supercharged 5.4L V8 delivering 469 horsepower and 516lb-ft of torque at the crankshaft. Assuming a conservative drivetrain loss ratio of 18%, a stock E55 would send somewhere in the area of 385hp and 423lb-ft of torque to the rear tires. Those power numbers allow the sleek luxury sedan to offer solid real-world performance, but one of the upsides to the modern AMG models is how easily you can add lots more power.

MBWorld member Das_it16 shared the dyno numbers from his modified 2004 E55 AMG, showing how easy it is to get far more power from the blown V8. You can check out the thread by clicking here.

Tuned E55 AMG on the Rollers

The short video above shows the OP’s 2004 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG making a dyno run and while we cant really see much, we can hear plenty. The car sounds incredible during the hard pull, but the results are more impressive than the exhaust note. Da s_it16’s Benz laid down 540.52 horsepower and 663.41lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels, which when using the same 18% drivetrain loss factor mentioned above leads to crank-power numbers of 659hp and 809lb-ft of torque.

Again, we are speculating on the wheel figures for the stock car and the crank numbers on the OP’s car, but the bottom line here is that this E55 is making far more power than it did when it rolled off of the assembly line.

The Mod List

To get those power numbers from the supercharged V8, the OP added long-tube headers, an x-pipe, an 82mm throttle body, a dual water-to-air intercooler setup, a water/meth injection setup (90/10 mix), a 185mm crank pulley, upgraded fuel pumps, larger injectors and a good tune. The dyno run above was made on 91-octane pump gas at 12 pounds of boost and with a DA of 2800, this AMG sedan made 540rwhp and 663rwtq.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
