Airbag Recall Expands to Mercedes Products

The recent Takata airbag recall has stricken nearly all of the auto industry’s biggest players, and now the NHSTA has announced a further expansion of this recall. What does this mean for you? Well, 711,266 Mercedes-Benz cars are now affected. According to a list on Edmunds, just about every model from the past few years is affected, and some models up to 10-years-old are part of the recall. It is well worth a check to see if your car is on the list.

The recall itself is strictly for cautionary purposes, rather than a reaction to any incidents that have been uncovered. That’s some solace, but the details are quite cringe-worthy. The NHSTA reports: “In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver’s frontal airbag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.”

By adding Mercedes to the list, the total amount of airbags recalled has now climbed to 5.4 million. The recall work for Mercedes will be done at a yet to be determined date.
