More Proof That Carbon Ceramic Beats Iron Rotors
Watch as This Brake Rotor Explodes Into a Million Pieces Under High Heat and Pressure.
There are a lot you guys here on at MBWorld that claim it’s basically impossible to beat a good set of iron rotors. I would like to provide you with a bit of evidence that proves otherwise. It did take a bit of cheating to make it happen, but here’s a video that shows an iron rotor exploding in spectacular fashion. And it’s all because of wear and uneven heating.
Beyond the Press put a Ford Fiesta on blocks and mashed the gas and brakes at the same time, just to see what happens. The result is brake rotor shrapnel hot enough and combustive enough to set one of their GoPro cameras on fire. (Warning, there is a bit of NSFW language when the GoPro bursts into flames.)
This is serious stuff. And if you look closely at the photo above, it’s all because the iron rotors are not heating evenly. That’s because they aren’t as good as carbon ones. When your brakes get hot, and then you stop moving the car, that heat sits there, and soaks right under the brake pads. This causes that section of the rotor to cool off slower than the rest of it, creating a weak spot. If you compare that weak spot on the rotor in the image to the size of the brake caliper, they match almost perfectly.
This warping, weakening, and heating issue is not something you get with carbon rotors. So to all of you guys out there saying your C63 is better with the iron brakes instead of the carbon ceramic ones, science says you’re wrong.
