The Cheap, Fast German Cars of eBay

Cheap and fast don’t really go together. Cheap and Mercedes don’t really go together. German and fast do go together, though.

Now mind you, this isn’t car buying advice. Buying a cheap German performance car poses a great risk to your wallet. You can research and find just the right one, but some cars just have issues that creep up more often than others.¬†This list, Jalopnik‘s “Ten Of The Fastest German Cars On eBay For Less Than $15,000,”¬†includes the usual suspects from Mercedes, including the SLK32, and the S600, but I feel there’s a hidden contender in there that was left off. My car.

Last November, while weeping at prices of a new C63, I came across a CLK55 AMG from a private seller on Craigslist. The early versions of the CLK AMG didn’t have the bonkers M157 engine, they simply had one that was an upgraded version of the same lump found in the W210 E55 AMG. It results in a savvy coupe that makes 362 hp and can rocket to 60 miles per hour in less than 5 seconds. Maybe I’m tooting my own horn, but sometimes a fast German car just sneaks up on you. It sure did for me.
