EVO Takes the S65 Coupe to the Track

The Mercedes-Benz S65 Coupe may just be the best looking car in the world, and with a 621 horsepower turbocharged V12, it is one of the most powerful as well. It also comes with advanced technologies like active body control that actually causes the car to lean into a turn, flattening body roll. But will a technology like that make the car faster around a track? EVO took the two-ton sedan out for a good flogging at the Anglesey circuit to find out.

The results were expected for anyone who is familiar with the S-Class Coupe. The car is insanely powerful and fast, but a driver’s tool it is not. The active leaning motion of the car actually serves to hamper track performance by reducing feel from the machine, and not providing information on proper levels of grip. The car suffers from terminal understeer, and in normal circumstances you can’t deactivate the traction system, so correcting the issue with a lead foot is basically impossible.

Still, the system was designed to make passengers more comfortable, and not to cut lap times. In that sense it works. The video is full of some great shots, lots of V12 noise, and after a few secret tweaks to the traction system, lots and lots and lots of smoke.
