An alleged ‘garage fire’ destroyed this classic Mercedes-Benz 280SL. But you should be able to buy it for a song.

The world of used cars is a slippery slope, ripe with as much danger as it is gold. While many resellers are honest folks, others attempt to hide things like flood or accident damage to maximize profits. And often, buyers are left with a car that requires expensive repairs. But in the case of this 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL that we spotted at The Collector Car Network, there’s no hiding or denying the kind of condition it’s in.

The seller claims that they had just purchased the classic Benz when it perished in a garage fire. Honestly, by looking at the poor thing, you’d think it had been crushed and left sitting outside for years. Outside of the somewhat recognizable headlights and still-visible chassis numbers, it’s pretty hard to even tell what the heck it is.

We’re not even really sure why anyone would buy a Mercedes-Benz 280SL in this kind of condition. Is it like a piece of art you can hang on your wall? Do you use it as a planter in your garden? On the bright side, it’s rust free, as the seller points out. At least it has one thing going for it.

And in case you were wondering, the condition is listed as “poor,” and the engine as “not running.” This is the kind of invaluable info classic car buyers need to know to make an informed purchase. The seller also believes that the car was originally red and equipped with a manual transmission. Other than that, good luck figuring out what you’ve got.

We’ve seen completely destroyed cars like this pop up for sale before, but we still can’t understand why anyone would buy one. Obviously, the seller has probably collected his insurance money and is simply trying to make a few extra bucks. But no matter how handy you are, sadly, there’s no bringing this classic Mercedes-Benz 280SL back from the dead!
