AMG is Relentlessly Building Up GT 4-Door Coupe Hype

By -

AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes, is bringing another standalone sports car into the ‘family,’ pun intended.

Don’t be fooled by the 4-door part of the GT 4 Door Coupe name. This isn’t another Mercedes that’s been given the AMG treatment. It’s a purebred and full-blooded sports car with back seats and extra doors so you can scare the hell out of the kids on the school run. It’s based on the E-class sedan’s MRA architecture but exists as a standalone model designed to take on the likes of BMW and their M6 Gran Coupe as well as Porsche’s Panamera Turbo and Audi’s RS7.

This little teaser video from the official Mercedes-AMG YouTube channel is very clear about the GT 4 Door Coupe’s place in the world. According to Mercedes, “There’s a new challenger at the track,” and the GT 4 Door Coupe is “Part of the AMG GT family at the starting line.”

In the overall scheme of things, the Mercedes-Benz CLS range ends where the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe’s begins. The GT 63 has its own bodywork and the grill is the boldest aesthetic link to the GT line. Under the hood, the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 model has Mercedes new inline-6 for those who like a smooth engine. The inline-six has the electrically driven supercharger and a 48-volt electric motor, as introduced on the new CLS 53, to produce 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque.

If you want the more raw and shouty version, the AMG GT 63 and 63 S variants get the 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8. The GT 63 S delivers a whopping 630 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque between 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. Mercedes-AMG are estimating a blistering 3.1 seconds to 60 mph. Perfect for when one of the kids forgot their homework and now they’re late for school. Pricing hasn’t been announced for the U.S market yet, but are expected to be between $175,000 and $195,000. The Limited Edition 1 model with its extra bells, whistles, and luxury features will start at around $216,000.
