Mercedes AMG Performance to Take on BMW M Sport

Seeing how much cash BMW is raking in with its M Performance editions for literally every car known to man, Mercedes has decided it wants in on this game as well. According to inside sources at Mercedes-Benz, the company is looking to create an AMG Performance sub-brand that would slot cars below full-on AMG cars and everyday consumer cars. Think about it this way: the company wants to create an M235i and an M2, and charge you up the butt for both.

The AMG Performance brand will have the ability to be upgraded from the stock car, so options will most likely be more horsepower, larger brakes, better suspension, and other items such as that. The items will all be options that you can tick off when buying your new Merc, but will only be offered on vehicles that are more sport-derived. I doubt you could get an AMG-sub-branded BlueTec — that just seems oxymoronic.

Personally, I think this is a way that both BMW and Mercedes can do what Porsche does by overcharging for every single piece of kit you want on the car. Skepticism aside, an AMG sub-brand allows one to have a more personalized take, meaning when you roll up to the stop light and see another person’s C-Class, you won’t feel bad because they’re cramping your style. It adds to the bespoke feel of a Mercedes.

In all, Mercedes’ pulling the “M Sport” card is both good and bad: Bad because MB can gouge you on the prices, and good because you will never see the exact same one driving around town.
