This Mercedes-Benz 560SEC Is a Hidden Gem

560SEC

The Mercedes-Benz 560SEC has quite the illustrious history. For starters, it’s a very unique machine, with most of the remaining survivors living deep in German collector’s garages, or in Japan. Second, they’re sort of the rogue Mercedes. The AMG badass that’s not really an AMG. It’s complicated.

To shed some light, let’s look at Petrolicious‘s recent interview with the owner of this lovely 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC. This is simply my personal take from that story, and I highly encourage you to head over there and read the whole enchilada. Or should I say, sauerkraut?

The story begins with a gentleman by the name of Tiga Sontag. Mr. Sontag looks like your average, early ’30s hipster dude, who just happens to be a mysterious music producer and own his own company (because of course). Sontag developed a taste for good cars very early in life, as his father seemed to have a rather eccentric taste for sheet metal, with vehicles ranging from Lincoln Continentals, to Corvettes, to Tiga’s biggest obsession: a Mercedes-Benz W124.

Once Sontag grew up and became a big boy with big bucks, he sort of followed in his father’s footsteps, cycling through an array of muscle cars, and finally landing on this lovely and equally badass 560SEC. The “non-AMG” AMG was imported from Japan, and it seems to have been maintained in a time capsule due to its stunning condition.

There’s a moment during the interview when both parties stop to ponder if all they’ve done in their adult life is actually mimic what their parents did when they were children. Perhaps I think about that too, and the results are rather scary. What about you?
