Mercedes-AMG C63S Is the Best-Sounding Small Sports Sedan

By -

The big V8 in a small Mercedes chassis has always been a beast of a car. Now with twin-turbos and a smaller V8, has the C63 S lost its bite?

The Mercedes C Class is the entry point for a small rear wheel drive sedan or coupe. The run of the mill C Class is a good car, offering a luxury car experience for a reasonable price. It is comfortable, quiet and calm. It is definitely not exciting.

Mercedes C63s AMG

So in 2008 when Mercedes made the first C63 AMG and it had a 6.2 V8 with 451 horsepower, things got exciting fast. The boring entry sedan, was now a tiny rocket ship to blast through your morning commute.

In this video, C63s owner AutoVlog shows us his six favorite things about his Mercedes. And of course one of them is the sound.

Although the C63 had a ton of power, it did lack a bit in handling refinement. Jeremy Clarkson once called it “an axe murderer with headlights” as it really enjoyed going sideways, all the time. As the years went on, the C63 AMG got more and more refinement, but one thing stayed true, the 6.2 liter V8. The big V8 had the most amazing roar for the exhaust.

Then in 2015, it all changed. Out went the AMG 6.2 liter V8 and in came the new AMG twin turbo 4 liter V8. As we all know turbos can ruin the sound of a performance car. Take a look at the horrible noises that could from the tailpipes of the BMW M3/M4. It went from screaming V8 to farting twin turbo inline six and it is the laughing stock of performance cars for engine sound.

Mercedes took a big risk with putting turbos on the AMG V8, but unlike BMW they understand engineering. The baby V8 AMG in the C63s is the best sounding car in its class. The rowdy V8 pops and bangs like a DTM car.  Bravo Mercedes.
